pSX via OSS - ever going to happen?

Hi,

I'm too lazy to register on _yet another board_. So, does anyone know whether there are plans to support OSS, as well?

If you're referring to it being *on* open source software, it's already been ported to linux a couple versions ago.

If you're referring to it *being* open source software, the answer is an absolute no.

Of course I'm referring to the Open Sound System, which has been the de-facto standard sound API in the Unix world until they decided to close the source. Fortunately its developers decided to open-source it again, but meanwhile the Linux world (including pSX) seems to have mainly switched to a self-developed API called ALSA which is a bloated and undocumented mess.

There's PulseAudio which aims to improve on this, but it will still take some time until it'll be really usable the way OSS is at the moment (especially regarding latency).

My next question would have been: Any plans to support PulseAudio/libsydney directly?

Well, I've been rather slow lately, so I apologize for that... LOL.

The answer is "doubtful" to both questions. Considering that pSX Author is mainly working on more important things at the moment (not to demean your request, but you have to admit that what you ask is rather low on the priority scale).

Besides (and here, my slowness might be kicking in again...), isn't it against the rules to use open source code in a closed-source project that 100% intends to stay that way? Or at the very least, something that is considered extremely poor form in the world of coding?

No.

Some licenses allow for the usage of open source software in closed source programs.

Ahh... alright. Wasn't sure about that, as I haven't read the terms of the difference licenses yet.

Next question: Any plans of adding Pulseaudio support, now that it seems to have gotten mature?
