Haven't heard of that happening before. Try using the -r switch or fast forward.

If that doesn't work try the -ci switch.

True. I was iffy about suggesting it since pSX Author sort-of stated that it shouldn't work, but since it (apparently) worked for one of the forum members, it's worth a shot if nothing else works.

All the Final Fantasy games that weren't ported to the console seem to be excessively sensitive to any form of scratching or scuffing to the CD. I originally got used copies of Final Fantasies VIII and IX and, although the scuffing was very light, neither would play properly. Getting new copies fixed this. I can't say for Final Fantasy VII myself, as I started off with a new copy, but I've seen a few reports from people with only light damage to their CDs - and the game won't run, or has problems.
Some other games I've had with far more severe scuffing have played fine. I don't know why the Final Fantasy series should be so affected in this way, but it would seem they are.

yeah i was going to suggest making an image of the disc but if you have worked this out i suppose you dont really need to but keep that in mind if you do run into any more lockups.

For future reference... What ended up working for you?
@patrickp: What do you mean by "All the Final Fantasy games that weren't ported to the console"? All the FF games on PS1 were *made* for that console (and two were later ported to PC). Do you mean ripped to a disc image? Maybe I'm just too tired and am not understanding what exactly you mean... :/

All the Final Fantasies that were made for the console (7,8,9) and not the ones ported (eg. 6).
At least I understood it that way.

True, Squall-Leonhart, but since pretty much all Playstation CDs were black ones (at least, all the ones I've seen), that doesn't explain why those three Final Fantasy titles seem to be so excessively affected by any surface damage.

Ahh yes, now I get it. Makes perfect sense now... ^^
All FF games 1-6 (except for 3) were ported to the PS1. 1 and 2 on Origins, 4 on Chronicles, 5 and 6 on Anthology. Though I understand it went down differently in PAL regions. It is funny how the PS1 originals seem touchy, while the ports seem relatively fine (except for some sound/graphics issues, which are probably due to the fact that the emulator basically has to handle the content *and* the emulation of them done by whatever software Square wrote for them on the discs).
