does gsdx give more fps on nvidia cards??

thats my impression.
i got a nvidia 6600 then i get an ati 2600 and the fps
drops in at least 5 or 6 frames (even I'd say 10 fps)

strangely I get more than 6 thousand points more with the ati card
on 3d mark tests than with the nvidia 6600.....

are you using the latest drivers?
If you are using the newest, perhaps try older drivers. Some of the optimizations in newer ones might have weakened pcsx2 performance.

ati 2600 is 2 generations newer than the 6600 and is comparable to the 8600. So it should absolutely be faster in 3DMark.

Several 2600 users out there don't suffer poor pcsx2 performance, so it must be a particular software problem or settings problem you have.

you can also try inofficial drivers like omega, but they're not supported by ATI.
working fine on my laptop btw.

I tried Omega and its almost the same thing with the latest from ati.
but I guess I must install Vista so I can test the DX10 support of gdsx since
2600 its dx10 compatible and 6600 wasn't.

Going to dx10 isn't going to improve your gaming speeds in this case. Just because 2600xt is dx10 capable does not mean it performs worse at dx9.
It should always offer you faster fps when playing pcsx2 at high internal resolutions in xp or vista compared to the 6600 .

The only thing dx10 will offer you is improved compatability. With wimnxp service pack 3 beta iirc it pulls ahead of vista on pcxs2 performance.

synthetic benchmarks don't mean anything, just means the card is better in that specific scenario.

ati has been scoring high on 3dmark for a while since their latest HD releases and yet still underperforms nvidia in games with the exception of the 3870 x2 that looks to be a good competitor.

I'd like to know more about this topic because I'm planning to replace my GF6600 with the HD 2600 XT.

HD 2600XT will always be faster than the Geforce 6600 when properly configured with the game and with the proper drivers.

The 2600XT is pretty much equivalent to the nvidia 8600gt. So you can be sure you get a decent performance jump going from a gf6600 to the 2600XT

A better choice since you like emulating would be getting a 8600gt instead of the 2600xt. Although the performance between the two cards is very close, nvidia has better drivers and faster opengl performance, which could be important if you use the opengl plugins (eg. pete's opengl for epsxe).

Thats not quite true, nvidia does perform better but at a much higher price point. Right now, the 3850 is the best when considering both price and performance.

ok I'v been doing more testing and now I must recognize that I was wrong...
the 2600 its not outperfomed by the nvidia but still there is no major advantaje.
by the way I get a notorious increase in fps by overcloking my (new) Intel 6550
in FFVII cerberus (in-game of course): 20~24 fps when cpu is on 2,3 Ghz
30~35 fps when cpu is on 3,0 Ghz
that means in a 4 Ghz machine it would be (for this game) about 50 and more fps

however Im sure ive read in the forum that in vista (using gsdx dx10) the performance of pcsx2 is a lot better.

seems HD2600XT has some driver issue i've seen people have decrease in it, try disabling AI from the ATI control panel and see if it gets back to normal speed, and yes most games will be limited to CPU power so change in Video card will only show in some games
