New graphics card = slower??

I have a P111 733mhz with 256mb ram. originally i didn't have a graphics card (using intel chip set for graphics). pj64 was pretty slow but somewhat playable. now i got a geforce fx 5200 128mb pci card (i only have pci slots, no agp). and my n64 has slowed down! so what's going on? shouldn't it get faster?

Make sure your FX is the card that is being used.

Re: New graphics card = slower??

You have to "use" the GeForceFX 5200, which means disabling the integrated graphics that come with your chipset.

Sometimes, this is easy. The BIOS/mobo will have an autodetecting feature, where if a card is present, it will default to that card.

Sometimes, this is hard. You might have to consult your motherboard manual and physically disable/enable certain jumpers to disable the onboard graphics.

Make sure the hardware is installed properly and stable drivers are installed.

Lastly, make sure that the plugin you use with pj64 are detecting the presence of your card so that pj64 makes use of it. Choose an appropriate plugin.

Re: New graphics card = slower??

thanks for the replies but i'm sure my driver and card are installed correctly and it is being used. i don't think i have to physically change any jumpers on my motherboard cuz under "video configuration" in my bios menu, i do have "pci" selected as oppose to "onboard".

my games are just a tad slower - like 3-4 fps but i do notice a difference. but i spent money on this new card and i expected a significant difference. with my specs, i should be running these games very smoothly right?

Don't touch the advanced settings unless you know what you're doing, as the defaults are the best... although you can often use 'Force Filtered Rendering' (Jabo's D3D6 1.5.x) safely.

All other options are your preference.

Your GeForceFX 5200 should destroy any integrated Intel chip be a mile, so if you have indeed set it up properly and Jabo's plugin says GeForceFX and not Intel, make sure you have the very latest dets and do not max out the settings for AA and AF (which can be completely absent in Intels) and use a suitable resolution and not 1600 X 1200.

Remeber to disable your other card in Windows too, maybe that would help

Re: New graphics card = slower??

Well since you have such a slow CPU...

Fast video cards like can run even SLOWER than a slower videocard when used with a slow CPU. Get a new CPU man.

Re: New graphics card = slower??

I once upgraded my geforce 2mx to a Radeon 8500 in my pentium 3 800mhz, and it was actually slower on low resolutions (800x600) and only faster on high resolutions.
