v64 & n64 files

I got Project 64 v1.4

There are 2 files I can use with the emulator , but wich one is the best? v64 or n64 files?

And why there are 2 rom files?

the v64 and n64 files represent the format of the game if it has been byteswapped or not. And if there are two rom files, are they the same game or two different games??

I just wanted to know why Mario Kart 64 is a v64 file and Super Mario 64 is a n64 file.

Now I understand it...

Thnx

You may find roms with a .z64 or a .rom extension as well. It all depends on what device was used to dump them.

FYI. Tool64 can identify and convert between N64 rom formats:
