which emulator and 3d card are most reliable

Hello everybody,

I had been playing psx with my voodoo 2 3000 for a long time, but since i'm out of games and I feel that my computer is going prehistoric, I though it was time for an upgrade.
Which is the best emulator (for compatibility) and what card should I buy to play N64 on my computer?
Thanks!

A Geforce or Radeon . I prefer Geforce but that's up to you .

I'd highly recommend a GeForce 2 (MX/Ti/normal, class of GF2 doesn't really matter for emulation quality) or higher, simply because most plugins are coded for it. The only other card that comes close are the Radeons, but they unfortunately have some nasty driver issues that make an nVidia preferable.

eVoodoo can be useful as a Glide wrapper for running UltraHLE. It's not perfect, but if you've got useful UHLE savestates then it's worth a try.

I used to use a Voodoo 3 3000 personally, until I replaced it with a GeForce2 Ti. Seems the Voodoo3 was causing my machine's instability, and it definitely supplied a speed boost in some games (GLQuake went from 41fps for 1280x960 up to 60fps, nice enough for me).

And for emulation, the most important reason is simple: Most graphics plugin coders work with GeForce2's or better, so their plugins work best on nVidia hardware.

Since you have a Voodoo 2 card, why don't you use SupraHLE? That has been coded for Glide cards and should run great on your system. The only problem is that it isn't as compatible as the other ones.

screw uhle, use pj64 and dave2001's glide640.1 plugin. its ****ing amazing (not jabo standard quite yet, but will soon be a serious contender), heck im even tempted to get a voodoo2 card for it.

version 0.1 plays smashbrothers, ridge racer 64, zelda OoT, and lots more. in an unreleased version, apparently Majoras Mask is running near perfect, and conkers bad fur day is also compatible. so voodoo users dont give up ur voodoo cards that easil.

the current version 0.1 should be availabe from www.ngemu.com (i think its still on the homepage) if not im sure its linked somewhere on ngemu's n64 plugin section. i cant remember dave's site

heres a link to dave's site: http://www.emuxhaven.net/~glide64/

has some useful info on necessary 3dfx drivers, so i guess its best to go there first.

non-voodoo users can experience dave2001's plugin using the latest evoodoo wrapper (make sure u stick the glide3.dll in the pj64/1964 dir, not the plugin folder, otherwise the plugin wont work). it has issues though. this time it really does benefit to hav a voodoo card.

thanks

Well, I never though thjat my voodoo card could make up with the geforce with the new emulators... I used Ultrahle when I was working on win98, but though that since that time ALL the programmers were going to write their emus for the new genetration 3d cards.
Do you think that why my card is still of some use is because of his enhanced 2d performance compared to the new ones?

dave's plugin will literally knock uhle down with ease. in fact, if u r just using emus for games, theres very few reasons now for voodoo users to actually ever use uhle again. personally i like uhle, even with a wrapper, dunno why i just do. still, at the moment, any voodoo user will get tremendous results with a voodoo2 and any other voodoo card beyond that and pj64 (or other zilmar-spec emus). and that means plenty of games to play.

I agree. Glide64 is outstanding, and it can make wonders with my Voodoo2. However, Ultra/SupraHLE have much lower requirements, while 1964/PJ64/Apollo and all the newer n64 emus require a high-end pc. I have a PentiumII 400, 64MB and I can play SupraHLE with full speed(or almost). The other emus run quite slowly(1964 is quite fast, but not as much as SupraHLE). But still the compatibility in SupraHLE is much lower than the others.

Hey! everything works fine for now and everything should be fine if I had something to see. It seems that the games runs, I can start a game, hear sound but I don't see anything the screen is black.
Am I a freaking moron or what? I've searched for any info that could help but haven't seen anything. Does anyone have a clue of what is happening or is anyone know a link I should've read and missed completely?
I feel like I need a book like N64 installation for dummy...

There is no Voodoo2 3000 AFAIK. The Voodoo2 was released just as Voodoo2, and later as Voodoo2 1000. The Voodoo3 was released in three models: 2000, 3000 and 3500. So, which one is really your card?
