Perfect Dark freezes my PC

Most of the time, Perfect Dark freezes after the "N logo" intro, unless I press whatever button on my keyboard/controller equates to A or B repeatedly. Then, I have to do it after the first level cutscene where Joanna is on that ship flying to the dataDyne building. I also have to do it after EVERY level and after configuring the Combat Simulator. Most of the time, it doesn't work, the screen turns black and my PC freezes. Is there any way to resolve this (short of getting PJ64 1.7)?

my project 64 beta freezes up on the second level where you have to put googles on in the gas chamber room or something.

Intro works fine here.
