Good or bad?

i've heard of some N64 ROMs being "bad" or "defective", but is there any way to find out if they're bad or not?

Aha! Much thanks to you. Now the real challenge is figuring out how to use it.

Choose to rename the rom, and if the renamed file has a [!] in the end of it, then it's a good dump. Ex: "Super_Mario_64_(U)_[!].v64"

hehe easy, get goodn64 and goodwindows and bin.zip at emulation64.com and put goodn64 and goodwindows in the same folder and put unzip the bin.zip as bin folder under the folder you put goodn64 and goodwindows.
then run goodwindows, press "n" will get you to n64 games,
go to bottom left, choose the folder you got roms,
goto top and select either rename or list or scan and click execute at the bottom. DEAD EASY I THINK THE README TEACH YOU THIS TOO.

Yeah, that's what you would think. Unfortunately, the zip I downloaded didn't.
