Final Fantasy 7 music slowdown

Final Fantasy 7 runs great on my set up at a steady 59-60 FPS. There is no graphical slowdown. However, whenever a random battle occurs the music slows down to a horrific rate. The framerate stays the same mind you, but the music...oh dear god the music. I'm using the OGL2 GPU and Eternal SPU, both of which have been configured to multiple specifications that I have found across the net.

Need help please.

  • Make sure FSAA and anistropic filtering is off in your graphics card's control panel - OpenGL2 does not support FSAA or AF
  • Lower the internal X/Y resoloution to 1/1
  • Disable 'Screen Filter'
  • Enable 'No render-to-texture'
  • Lower the resoloution to 640x480
  • Change Framebuffer Effects to 2 - note: this will introduce a 'load' when framebuffer effects are called (like at the beginning of a battle) To make the game playable with these setting, Special Game Fixes need to be enabled.
Quoted from here.

What are your computer specs? If you want to keep using OGL2, have a look here.

Yep read that one. I don't have AA or AF on in my control panel. I'm using Pete's OGL2 GPU 2.7 and the Eternal SPU 1.50.

Here's my current configuration.

Use Eternal SPU plugin 1.41 because 1.5 is in beta stage and may be buggy sometimes.

Well your PC is ok but i would suggest that you use Pete's OpenGL 1.76 with settings from that site i quoted.

Yeah I switched back to Eternal 1.4 but there wasn't any change at all. And there's no difference between OGL and OGL2 for me. FPS is still the same steady 60. It makes no sense that if audio is tied to your framerate why it would slow the music down to a crawl as soon as I hit a battle swirl. The audio is fine, it's just the music. :/

Try setting it to SPUasync-->Smooth. And try the OGL settings I posted...it might help with Framebuffer Effects at 3. You can also try unchecking "use render to texture" and turning off filtering.

make sure to use epsxe 1.52. i tried it with 1.60 and have some minor music slowdown after those battle whirls.
specs:
A64 2800+
1024 DDR400 RAM
GF 6600GT

1.52 is fine, doesnt matter what i change. 1.60 seems to be troublesome for FF series.

i recommend this tool, im not sure what i did but i can run 1.52 or 1.60 from "misc options", there are 2 exe files: epsexe_old and standard one:
The Delta Project :: An ePSXe Autorunner/Frontend

@hushypushy

your OGL2 thread is confusing. 4 config screenshots?
btw, you should add that it looks best when using TV-Out and play it on TV ;]

I believe the reason is explained in the thread.

All games do, TV makes the image smoother.

The main picture is the newest config. The other ones are old and are for archive purposes.

I don't really agree with the TV-Out looks better comment...it looks just a bit better than the PSX. Big deal. I think it looks better in high res on a monitor where you can see the sharp polygons and such. But that's all preferential, so whatever you like is the best for you.
