Emulation requires a decent system.

Make sure you've downloaded and are using Pete's Plugins: http://www.pbernert.com/html/gpu.htm
(the OpenGL2 plugin works a bit better with FF8 over the regular OpenGL one, but requires a better system)

Move it to your plugins folder (it's in the ePSxe folder) and go to Config -> Video to select it.

Go to Config -> Video -> Configure

Now, in the lower left corner, click on 'Fast' for the default settings.

Then, set these things to the correct value:
Off-Screen Drawing: 0
Framebuffer Effects: 3
Frambuffer Upload: 1

If you still experience slowdowns, lower the frambuffer effects/upload even more although doing this may get rid of battle swirls entirely and mess up transitions from screen to screen.

EDIT: Alternatively, try using P.E.Op.S. Soft GPU (Windows) from the site I gave you, and using the 'Fast' settings with that.

Use SSSPSX and you can max the settings.

Are you sure fireblaster_lyz? Why would that be if you're still using the same GPU plugin?

EDIT: For some reason, SSSPSX isn't letting me select my BIOS (it doesn't appear even though it's in the folder).
