Question Ghost in the Shell

I'm having a problem with Ghost in the Shell (PAL version).
When trying to run the game, it plays amazingly sluggishly, even with EVERYTHING turned down (i.e. 640x480 resolution, 16-bit, no filtering, sound off, etc). Turning frameskip on and off affects the movies in the game (i.e. they play too fast without it on, and normal speed with it on) but this has no effect on the game itself. Is there something else I need to set, or is Ghost in the Shell just far too demanding a game (which I doubt). Other games run fine.

System specs:

Duron 1.1ghz
GeForce FX 5600 256mb DDR
512mb DDR SDRAM

Post your plugin settings. If the movies run too fast without frameskip on then you probably don't have the frame limiter turned on. Either set it to 50 (because it's a PAL game) or set it to Auto.

No, I got the movies working fine, there's no problem there. It's the game itself I need help getting working.

As I said before, post your plugin configuration . Without that we can't help you very well.

update your drivers for the 5600. go to www.nvidia.com and pick up the latest ones there. install those, reboot, and try it.

if you are playing off a CD, try making an ISO out of it, that will eliminate poor CD plugin configuration and/or a slow CD-ROM drive.

then, use the OpenGL2 plugin, and turn off AA and AF. just press the "nice" preset and you should be on your way.

I'll give the soft plugin a go.

::EDIT:: The soft plugin works fine. I wonder why the GPU plugin doesn't run as well, even though it utilises a potentially higher amount of graphics processing power?

It's because (from what I remember from plugin docs) GitS uses a horrible FB mode or texture windows or something. PC H/W graphics is quite different to PSX graphics, so many workarounds have to be in place to get it to work correctly. A software plugin isn't concerned about that because it's purely done by the CPU.
