I can't get music to work!

I can't get music to work in any either of the games I have, those being Suikoden 2 and Final Fantasy Tactics.
When I say music I think I mean the digital audio - the music that plays during the intro movies for instance. In game music in Tactics works, but I think that's midi (or am I way off base here?)
I've tried the original disc, an iso, and even tried mounting the iso with daemon tools. I do get sound effects, but they even sound a bit off.
What's wierd is that if I try to bring up the sound option from the config menu, my system hard freezes. I can get to that window through the wizard and configure the plugin, but it doesn't matter, music doesn't work. Also, if I hit test at that plugin screen, nothing happens at all.

I've tried Pete's direct sound plugin, null2's audio driver, eternal, and the spu core, all with the same results.

running a p4 2.8, radeon 9600, cmedia ac97 sound device (onboard on my mobo). Haven't noticed any problems with directsound in any other applications. Any suggestions are appreciated

Did you enable XA in the sound configuration dialog? (not plugin config)

aha. Problem was that my computer would hard freeze if I went into the sound configuration dialog, so I couldn't enable it. Was able to get around this setting by downloading the null (no output) plugin, choose that in the wizard, go into the sound dialog, enable XA, run the wizard again, choose pete's plugin, and with some tweaking to the plugin config it works. Thanks for your help Shadowflare.

It is beyond me why XA Audio isn't enabled by default...
