Dragon Warrior 7 Sound Problem (and FF4)

Okay, no matter what I do, I seem to get messed up sound with DW7 .. What happens (easiest way for me to test), is turn the game on no frame delay (full speed), go run around, get into fights.. start attacking.. sounds will get left stray, a resonant high pitch screech from an attack, etc.. It's VERY annoying. Some of them stop once the battle ends, others wont stop until a new battle starts! VERY irritating as you can imagine... This occurs whether I use my cd, or I just ripped it this morning hoping perhaps it was a cdrom issue.. no such luck.

Any help on this would be GREATLY appreciated. My sound settings are as follows:

Plugin: P.E. Op.S DSound Audio Driver 1.6

Code:
[x] Enable Sound (Select to enable ADPCM sound)
[x] Enable CDDA Sound (Select to enable CDROM sound)
[x] Enable XA sound (Select to enable XA sound in MDEC)
[ ] Enable SPU IRQ hack (need in some games)
Please note, turning on SPU IRQ hack will cause many sounds to not work at all, and either way doesn't solve the problem.

Plugin Settings:
Code:
Mode: 1: High compatibility mode (timer event, slower)
       Volume: 1: medium
Reverb: 2: PSX reverb (best quality)
Interpolation: 2: Gaussian interpolation (good quality)

XA music
[x] Enable XA playing
[ ] Change XA speed, if it is played too fast (more cpu power needed)

Misc
[ ] SPU IRQ - wait for CPU action (Valkyrie Profile and MGS)
[ ] Mono sound mode (for slower PCs/sound cards)
[ ] Enable developer debug mode
[ ] Enable sound recording window
The Change XA Speed has no bearing either, off didnt seem to adversely affect anything, so I left it off.

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated..

try mode 2 in peops, also try other spu's (like eternal 1.41) to see if it's related to peops, or the problem lies in another thing.

Okay, it seems to have solved it, and even work better (plays MORE sounds that peops didnt)... However, it's phenomonally slower.. It hardly even runs full speed now. I tweaked the settings to get them fairly low and still work, but still it's slow.. Ah well, time to upgrade I suppose.

On a side note, I can't get my FF4 game to work _at all_ with the sound.. the sound just blazes ahead full speed, way out of sync, then generally just stops.. Not sure what the heck is going on here, tried 3 different sound plugins, with TONS of varying options, all to no avail..

try using eternal spu lite, it's less pc expensive.

Awesome! Thanks man!

The sound quality of Lite is definitely less than the regular one, but for most of the gaming, it'll probably suffice.

Any idea on my FF4 problem with the sound?

i'm very pleased to hear it works for you . About FF4, i cannot help you, as i don't own the game, though it doesn't mean anyone can help you... Just wait and see. Ah!, although you said you tried lots of options, maybe you'd like to try some of the 'special game fixes' on the spu plugin again. They are not that much, so you can try them one by one, then in groups of two, and then the three. Have you cache vag decode activated? try to disable it. Post your exact gpu, spu and cd-r configs, and let's see what can be done.

I managed to get FFIV working perfectly - I'm at work now so I can't post the plugin settings but I remember posting them somewhere around here before. Do a search on FFIV and Eternal SPU.

Cool! That + turning off the IRQ hack on the main setting page made it work! Thanks much!
