How Do You Play Parasite Eve?

The only Square games I have ever played was Final Fantasy games. Now that I get this game I have no idea how to play. I don't have the manual because my friend only gave me the game. I went thru the tutorial but I still can't understand it. Look at this picture. I always die when I get to this screen because I can't shoot her. Can you please tell me what the controls are to attack please? Thanks!

To shoot use the X button. Since you have two bullets you have to press it twice, one for each shot.

Also, make sure Melissa/Eve (or any other enemy) is within the sphere when you attack. If they're outside you'll most likely miss. The best way to fight is to attack at close range, that way you'll always hit and you'll have a greater chance of doing a critial hit. Also make sure to dodge enemy attacks. The less damage you take the more bonus points you're rewarded.
