Final Fantasy VII and Chocobos

I'm having a huge problem with the chocobo sidequest. every time i have to choose an option using left or right and the O button, i can never execute it. it always either moves to the next chocobo or exits the screen. i know that that's the way i have to do it because after repeating the combination like 20 times, it might actually work. this is getting very annoying, does anyone have a solution for this?

Did you reconfig your controls to make X the standard confirm button and O the standard abort button? If yes, switch back to the standard controls while choosing your Chocobo.
