i haven't played ff9 in a while when i went to play it again the battle screen didn't appear

pluging settings and PC specs can help a little ^^

Try increasing the Off-Screen Drawing level. 3 does the trick IIRC.

If you are using PEOpS Soft driver, you should disable the frameskip option.
