Yes a software plugin such as peops would be the best in this case. It shouldn't require any major tweaking, just select a resolution that your machine can hack.

Some people with GeForce cards prefer Pete's OpenGl with Full VRAM Primitives enabled, but I just used PEOpS instead.

Er full vram doen't exist anymore in the new 1.63 plugins. You now set framebuffer acesss to 4 (full software drawing)
