Another Resident Evil 2 Thread?

hello all - first off, this forum rules - its helped me with a couple games as I am brand new at this emu stuff - anyhow Ive got some problems here - the graphics are good enough in the game - a bit choppy but Im not picky - my problem lies with camera changes and cutscenes - here goes...

NOTE: I swear I searched these forums for the past couple of hours reading post pertaining to this game - I did not find a similar problem.

I start the game just fine - I run to the gun shop and on the way sometimes (sometimes not) the game hangs for like 5 seconds when the camera view changes - even that I can deal with - Im patient enough.......

I enter the gun shop - move forward a bit and buddy says "freeze!" and I swear to god the game freezes - have to restart - sometimes Ill make it a bit into the cutscene, but when the dude puts the shotgun to his side, it freezes.

so heres what I got and my settings for ePSXe.

comp specs
AMD 64x2 dual core 3800+
3 gigs ram
XP with SP 2
Radeon x1900xt 512MB

ePSXe settings
ePSXe v1.7.0
Petes OpenGL2 Driver 2.9
ePSXe SPU core 1.7.0
bios SCPH1001.BIN

scrnsht.jpg

any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

thanks for your time

if you are planning to use either of the OGL plugins you need to first make sure your catalyst drivers are 8.5 or higher. are you playing the game from the disc or are you using an image? since you are using 1.7.0 you will not get the multi core cpu issue that was common in earlier versions. however, since you are using an AMD cpu then you might want to download this optimizer and run it as there have been some people getting performance problems with AMD dual cores (this issue is not limited to epxe either)

what format is the image in and how are you loading it, are you mounting it on a virtual drive or are you using the file>run iso method in the emulators GUI?

Could be a corrupted image.

You should try checking your CDROM with some scandisc for CD like the ones in Nero's tools. If it's alright (no bad or red sectors... in data area) then try making a new image, in another format.

yeah definetly make a new image in a different format becuase .iso is not what you want to use for psx games.

ok - I downloaded the optimizer, installed - I then made a new image and now have the .img - I downloaded the D3D plugin and ran the game - same problem - I switched back to the OpenGL2 driver as the D3D one looked worse (white lines showing up) - is it perhaps a setting with the OpenGL2? like maybe I got it configured wrong? any more help or insight to this would rule as I want to play this fricken badboy

thanks in advance

alright i think what you should do first is find out if it is actually a plugin/epsxe related issue or if it is something to do with the image itself or the disc you made it from. try the image or the disc on another emulator like psx or pcsx and see what it does.

I downloaded both of those emulators - the psx one set up fine except that the controller setup is all messed - like the thumbsticks dont work, everything is backwards (Im using a logitech dual action) - so I cant really move about the level - pcsx wont even load past the "this game contains gore.... bla bla bla"

am I drunk, or is this the hardest game to get to run ever?

I could be drunk........

I was playing it with/on my P3 + Integrated GFX controller (with 16MB).
And it worked fine, the fact that I finished it twice on that PC.

yeah it works fine for me as well, the majority of problems ive seen people having with this game were related to the voiceovers being cut short or not playing at all, however i havnt seen someone reporting the game actually freezing during cutscenes so its possible your issue is being caused by something outside of epsxe and/or possibly something outside of your system. have you tried playing from both the disc itself and your image and does the game work on a real PSX? its possible the disc is damaged so check for scratches or any other blemishes on the surface and do what you can to clean it if you find any.

disc is mint really - no real scratches at all - I actually made it to a savepoint and was able to continue on but it froze at the next cutscene when talking to the dying cop - Im wondering if it could be my system - but I wouldnt really know what to check or config - the problem really does seem to lie with cutscenes and door loading - all I know is, is that it is driving me fricken nuts

Its a problem with your GFX card or your OS, handling those GFX effects(instructions) in wrong way :

- Probably an antivirus, it might be [try disabling any program that have a relation with CPU/GFX process].

- Or your OS, is really damaged, try formatting your OS partition, then install again your OS, and scan your HDD for viruses then back again to ePSXe, that's all I can say.

its NTSC - Ive been able to play it sort of - like when a freeze happens, 90% of the time if I just dont do anything and wait, it "catches up" and play continues - but now Ive made it to a cinematic where it freezes for good everytime - I just formatted my HD like a month ago when I got my new MB and GFX card - as to killing any processes that are in relation with CPU/GFX process, I really wouldnt know what does what - I downloaded a program called WinPatrol to take a deeper look into my running processes - I killed a bunch that I really didnt need running but some I just dont know about - I think you are right though, hanibal81 - its like there is something in the background making this game stutter - I ran ad aware and found no viruses of any kind - Im usually pretty safe in that regard - pretty careful of what and where Im downloading and such.

on another note, just want to say thanks to you guys for taking the time to respond and give input - I feel that somethings gonna get figured out here quick.

if it does have something to do with a running background application, malicious or not, then you would see this in other games on epsxe too, i highly doubt it would be limited to this single game here. so with that said, how do other games perform with the emulator?

edit- btw in the GUI go to run>enable logs, then restart epsxe and load up your game, return to the GUI via the esc key and post whatever it says in that black DOS-style window (the output). if there is any sort of problem or error that the emulator detects it will usually show it there.

Try first what JONC said and post info/screenshot of the output Console, then try this :
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, a deep idea comes from reading all the posts in this thread twice, is that your game is OK, your OS/PC are OK, the only thing that makes the bug is the CD-R plugin (or say a CD-R reading lag/bug...etc), so please fellow my dumb mind just for this time, and try to set your ePSXe emu with this specs :

1 - Download ePSXe v1.5.2 and extract/install it in a second partition then the C: .

2 - Get MY PLUGINS FOLDER, and copy all the plugins to your ePSXe plugins (hopefully SHINDO will not see this ).

3- Select/set your plugins as fellow :

Select Pete's D3D GPU v1.76 :

Select Eternal SPU Plugin :

Select Xeven's CDR plugin :

the only other game I have is Syphon Filter - it ran like crap at first (Uber choppy and stuff) but since Ive been trying to play RE2 and making all of these changes, I just loaded it up and it works perfect - so thats a bonus - here are the results of the log and another look at my Video config since I made changes from suggestions I saw via google when I was looking for similar problems...
