What do you suppose causes the FFT slowdowns?

Hi all,

This isn't exactly a help request, more of a curiosity thing. Sure, FFT works fine using Peops SoftX GPU, but it does break my heart to give up those GPL-enhanced battlefields. Only trouble is those silly spells. I can't understand why a game that is so graphically simple would cause modestly powerful systems to choke for only certain instances. Almost everything else in the game runs at a beautiful 60fps.

I don't think it's a loading issue or an emulation issue, because if it was either of those things, the slowdowns would occur during Peops emulation as well, and they don't. It's got to be a graphics thing. But the spells are scarcely more complex than little 2d animations.

I had a thought that it might have something to do with the darkening effect that happens when you do anything. Thoughts?

Yeah sure. I don't see the option to copy all that info, but:

It's an Asus Eee running an Intel Celeron clocked at 900MHz, ePSXe 6.0 on Ubuntu Gutsy, 512MB of RAM,

Pete's MesaGL (latest), no texture smoothing, framebuffer stuff is at 2 - 2 - 1; frameskipping is on, framerate set to 60.

But the game acts the same way no matter what system I put it on.

you dont see a copy to clipboard button in the video config? my knowledge of this specific plugin you are using is non-existent really so i dont know what to suggest specifically. ill assume its similar to the OGL plugins and your compatibility settings look fine although you can try doing a 1-2-1, 2-0-1, or 1-0-1 and see what that does. have you tried running the game from an image? you generally get better performance that way.

Oh yeah, I always run from an image.

I just assumed that everybody who played this game with an OGL-enhanced GPU had the same slowdowns during spells. Am I incorrect in that assumption?

BTW, the MesaGL is pretty much the same as Pete's OGL for Windows. But, no, I don't see a copy and paste option. I thought it was weird when I looked for it too.

im using a 2-2-1 setup myself with the OGL2 and with that game i dont really use any fancy shaders or filtering and i dont seem to get this issue you are getting, im not certain that plugin is pretty much the same as the OGL ones but if it is then there must another factor at work here. you say this is the only game that does this?

edit- what about your video card, what video card are you using?

Hey nate, I haven't fully tested it, but it seems to be working for me, too! I don't think my little lappy can run the game as fast as your computer (integrated graphics), but I notice that spell effects seem to be remarkably smoother now that I've gone to FVP.
