Apparently fixes shuddering and stutters in some game with HD series cards, thought it might fix OpenGL, I can only hope they'll fix OpenGL one day.

Just wanted to thank Magnus for those DLLs and his idea on how to use them. They worked like gangbusters on my ancient Radeon 9800.

It's a shame because the new Catalyst drivers do introduce some nice changes (I get better framerates out of certain games that are just outside of my PC's capability, for instance). This solution lets me keep that stuff and still be able to use the old drivers for programs that need them.

I'm glad it worked for you RichterIX, for me it didn't work at all on XP(closed epsxe)
and in vista it made things much worse (couldn't see most of the stuff)

I'm thinking this has something to do with the generation of card, for example RichterIX with an 9800pro can have OpenGL working fine, but Degeon with a HD2900XT and myself with an x1600pro don't.

Found this at driverheaven ATI Catalyst 8.3 Out Now - Page 2 - DriverHeaven.net

Yes it looks to be the removal of Vertex related extensions is the culprit.

Not only OGL bug is presented in ATi drivers. When using DX plugin renedering speed drops up to 12 FPS and it is unplayable. So i must using Soft plugin.

what are your system specs?
Dx plug in is slower to me then OpenGL in my experience. but it isn't "that" slow(lowest I got was 45 FPS).
Try to update your DirectX software. enter Dxdiag(in XP = Start=>run and enter dxdiag. in vista type dxdiag in the search line) go to directx files and make sure you do not have any error(such as debug vrs.) if there is a problem here you should see a yellow exclamation mark near the files and the error details in the notes. since however this is off topic I cannot elaborate further here. you can PM me if you'd like and I'll see what I can do.

back on topic
I have found that Penumbra has some glitches. while there are no triangles(yet...) they are indeed disturbing and obviously shouldn't be there. can anyone else confirm

NextPeteGL

I have just bought a comp with all the mod 'cons' and I am furious... however I have been trying everything and well I was just wondering why NextGL manages to resolve the black triangles problem (which i also suffer from) and Pete's can't... ? I must say NextGL is nothing short of umm... poor... but isn't their something that the two can incoporate to solve this rift in the gaming community? I might be completely barking up the wrong tree... NextGL is an OGL based plugin?

Since I can't test it right now, providing:

1) You have an ATI card;
2) You are using the affected, newer drivers;
3) What you describe is true (and there is no reason to not believe you)

NextGL shows that coding an OpenGL based plugin that does not have the triangle problem is possible with the current drivers. It may be however, that a lot of code has to be changed to accommodate ATI cards.

NextGL has no triangles, but is hard to configure (the readme doesn't help either, and the links on the NextGL/3d site are broken) and has graphical problems of its own. See here.

NextGL also doesn't use vertex to accelerate render to texture functions (Frame buffer effects)

the game you are playing has no involvement with this issue, its purely ATI catalyst driver-based so any game you try under an OGL plugin setup is likely to show the same glitches. aside from rolling back to catalyst 7.4 or below im not sure what else you could do at this point. its also possible you could use ATI omega drivers instead but im not really 100% sure if they are unaffected or not.
