Another FFVII

Hey guys.

Been trying to get FF7 looking nice before I start playing it, but the problem I have is characters and monsters all flicker during battle and a little when walking around.

My computer specs are:
Athlon X2 4000+
Radeon HD 2600XT (with 8.2 catalyst drivers)
2GB ram

I'm using an image on ePSXe 1.6 (have also tried 1.5.2), and am using Pete's OGL2 2.8 (with SimoneT's OpenGL2 ARB shader effect: "HQFFVII")

Plugin: Pete's OpenGL2 Driver 2.8
Author: Pete Bernert
Card vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.
GFX card: ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT

Resolution/Color:
- 1680x1050 Fullscreen - NO desktop changing
- Internal X resolution: 1
- Internal Y resolution: 1
- Keep psx aspect ratio: off
- No render-to-texture: off

- Filtering: 2
- Hi-Res textures: 2
- TexWin pixel shader: on
- VRam size: 256 MBytes

Framerate:
- FPS limitation: on
- Frame skipping: off
- FPS limit: 50.0

Compatibility:
- Offscreen drawing: 1
- Framebuffer effects: 2
- Framebuffer uploads: 2

Misc:
- Scanlines: off
- Mdec filter: on
- Screen filtering: on
- Shader effects: 3/4
- Flicker-fix border size: 0
- GF4/XP crash fix: off
- Game fixes: off [00000002]

I have mucked around with the settings but still can't get it right.

Thanks in advance for any help .

I'm using this config and everything works fine:

Plugin: Pete's OpenGL2 Driver 2.8

Card vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
GFX card: unknown board/AGP/SSE2

Resolution/Color:
- 1024x768 Fullscreen - NO desktop changing
- Internal X resolution: 2
- Internal Y resolution: 2
- Keep psx aspect ratio: on
- No render-to-texture: VC

- Filtering: 3
- Hi-Res textures: 0
- TexWin pixel shader: on
- VRam size: 256 MBytes

Framerate:
- FPS limitation: on
- Frame skipping: off
- FPS limit: Auto

Compatibility:
- Offscreen drawing: 1
- Framebuffer effects: 2
- Framebuffer uploads: 2

Misc:
- Scanlines: on [200]
- Mdec filter: on
- Screen filtering: on
- Shader effects: 4/2
- Flicker-fix border size: 1
- GF4/XP crash fix: off
- Game fixes: on [00001002]

I'm not using same ARB shader than you, so you can try to turn it off or try different levels with it, but I don't believe that the shader is the troublemaker. I'm using ePSXe 1.5.2 with FFVII.

dont use an OGL based plugin, ATI drivers have horrible OGL support at the moment. either use a software or D3d plugin instead.

@Titus03: Tried your settings and still the same, thanks anyway.

And damn that sucks. Well I tried Pete's D3D plugin, and it fixes it but I can't get the battle swirls to work and get low FPS during battles.

Also, do you think the Omega drivers may work better with OGL?

i dont know really since i havnt used an ATI card in quite some time, im not really familiar with their drivers as i used to be but generally i would not expect much. there is a game fix in the d3d plugin that should help with the battle swirl, if not try using version 1.5.2. or disabling framebuffer access to turn the swirl effects off completely. you can also create an image of the game disk and play the game that way to avoid performance issues caused by your cd/dvd drive.

and FYI, do not enable too many visual enhancements like hi res textures for FF7 because it usually triggers a well known glitch known as the "green line glitch". texture filtering is fine but only use the 0 or 4 settings, dont crank it up to 6 because sometimes that triggers the glitch as well.

i dont think any kind of setting recommendations for the OGL plugins we could give are going to do much for him as this sort of thing is almost completely driver based. for now i believe he is limited to software or d3d plugins until they fix their drivers which i would not expect to happen anytime soon.

Complain to ATI, they weren't interested in me but when they get several people complaining over the same thing *maybe* they'll do something, thats a big maybe.

Hmm OK guys well thanks for your help. Knew I should have got a 8800GTS instead

For the D3D plugin, all the things you said, and even with the framebuffer access off I still get low FPS in battle scenes. And I am running off of a image file, also tried it with the CD.

Also what is a software plugin?

is it at the end of the battles? i never found a way to fix this really, sorry. but i believe this is only present in the D3d plugin, not the software. and a software plugin is a plugin that basically renders the game as close as possible to the way the game is rendered on a real psx because it doesnt use your hardware for accelerated rendering like the D3d and OGL based plugins do. if you have used the freeware emulator psx before, its sort of the same concept.

disable AA completely before running epsxe, especially if using the D3D plugins.
