Obligatory: "Is this good enough?" Thread.
Phenom X4 9950 BE clocked @ 3.2-3.4 GHz on a 790FX/GX Board, 4GB PC8500, and an HD4870(X2?).
Feasibly, could it run PCSX2 at a stable 60 FPS on most games that are playable, or should I just swallow my hate for Intel, grab an overpriced E8500 and slap it into a Rampage Formula and pretend it's an AMD/ATI rig while I play PCSX2 comfortably? Just wondering. X360 and PS3 have spoiled me. Itching to finally play FFXII, but I want to do so in like, high res. |

Hmm, i ususally dont like to anwser to these threads. But your's is at least well written and
not ridiculuous (Like those Athlon64 3200+, GeforceFX5200 posts ).The cpu will prolly be fast enough for FF12, vga as well. But nevertheless there are games which just won't run fast, not even on my 4ghz core2duo. As there's nothing much faster out there yet (for pcsx2) that means every system will choke on those games

That's the nature of emulation, and I understand that. I'm just a *huge* fan of AMD and ATI, and provided that the solutions they offer can operate within reason what Intel/nVidia(lol) can, I have no issues with my purchase.
Really, I only inquired because my research shows that Quads aren't supported by PCSX2(and don't ever plan to be), which is to be expected from newer tech... but I'm not building a rig to just play PCSX2, rather just one that can. Thanks for the input, I guess I can stop configuring new wishlists on Newegg until the 9950 and new 790FX boards hit. |

A stock E8500 will smoke a 9950 BE in equivalent systems. Reason being:
The E8500 comes with a stock clock of 3.16 GHz over the 9950's 2.6 GHz. And that since Quad CPU's are still infantile, they will fall prey to even similarly clocked dual cores. This is because most applications today are optimized for dual or single core CPUs, and when you throw a Quad core at it, it's like "WTF am I supposed to do with this?" and uses the extra two cores to roast marshmallows. The same exact thing was the case when dual cores first hit, and when SLI and (later) Crossfire started to show up. The hardware goes to waste because the software to use it doesn't exist, or doesn't use it for a good function. I'm buying a Phenom because I'd rather not play video games at all than to give my hard earned money to a company like Intel. If I can do what I need with my AMD, that's good enough for me. |

No, let's analyze this ok?
First, Phenoms are clock for clock compared to Athlon64 X2's about 10% faster. This means your 3.4Ghz Phenom would be as fast as A64 X2 @ 3.6-3.7Ghz. That's not so bad.... Now since the "earlier" Core2Duo's are about 20% faster than the Athlon X2's it makes about 10%..... ..... So your 3.4Ghz Phenom would be as fast as a 3.2 Core2Duo...... That would be fast enough to run FFX at full speed. Tekken 5 wouldn't be though.. So basically, 2D games and not so comples 3D games could run full speed on your system. Tekken 5 and Resident Evil 4 not really.

you might have to wait for some new drivers if you're going to get a HD4870.
a user reported some bad slow-downs with a HD4850 using GSdx. he said it ran faster with his 8800gt. this problem happened with other ATI cards before, and was later fixed (supposedly) by newer drivers. personally, i think you should go with an nVidia card if you want to play PCSX2 so you don't have to deal with the problems...
