'Modded' PS2?

What does the USB BIOS dump thread mean by 'modded' PS2? Does it mean one of those flat (Slim?) PS2s, some sort of homemade application, etc. If modded = homemade application or flat/slim PS2 I'm stuck, because I've no formal knowledge of computer coding (As in a college class or anything), and the flat/slim PS2 I used to have broke almost instantly after purchase. (Forgive me if this is a forbidden type topic. The amount of threads lying around on this website is staggering. >_<)

modding gives the ability to run homebrew. there are 3 methods.

1. Mod-chip
2. Swap Magic
3. Memory card exploit
