It seems to really help in areas that chug in Kingdom Hearts, the areas that ran at high fps didn't change much. One place that I really noticed a difference is the waterfall which increased from 31/32 fps to 48ish fps. I tried them seperately and only setting it for 256 colors seems to have an effect. The game itself seems to look the same.

I've got a 256mb card as well.

It seems to have no effect on the max fps with AA off.

strange .... still wondering why I lost fps ...

However ... seems to be a great hint for Zerofrog for a major tweak.
Maybe there's even more in it if he find's the reason for this behaviour.
I'm pretty excited.

well it seems it is what it says on the tin

the warning does state you will lose visual quality, and the image is certainly more jagged and not as smooth, i spose it helps on games which have intensive graphics, but im not going to bother on games like FFX and KH i dont think.

KH is a little bit faster in some graphic intensive areas.

and i found some GFX bugs:
- the river in re4 is flickering.
- this blue, transparent way above the macalania woods in ffx is missing.

i think its a problem because the missing alpha blender

It actually looks more smoothed out and even less aliased when running in 256 colors mode. Right now, I'd prefer it to be faster with the larger render target (4xAA) (and smoother) than sharper/slower or fast and blocky with no AA(same fps). You can see between the two screenshots that I posted, the 48ish fps screenshot is much smoother where as the 31fps shot is more aliased with a few more fine details. The roof of the shack is very jagged in the shot w/out 256 color mode where as in the shot with it enabled it is smooth. However, IMO the grass and bushes look better in the slower screenshot.

I have noticed that having 256 color mode selected messes up the transitions, filling them with a colorful static, instead of them being their normal simple fade. I tried to capture this with another screenshot. I would imagine that it would probably mess up other effects as well.

Works for me too - in 2D and 3D!

I tried it on:
Mushihime-sama - a crazy Japanese top-down shooter.
22.7 to 31.0

Guitar Hero 2 - you all know
9.8 to 11.5

But the BIGGEST improvement is that I have a little lag from keystroke to action in both of these games, and this appeared to significantly reduce this!

So, it helps more in the slower areas? now that's a good discovery then!

It seems to only help in heavily graphical areas(such as with 4x AA where you get fewer fps with it on than with it not on) where the emulator is GPU limited. It does smooth out the screen and potentially mess up effects as well.

I just tried setting it to 256 colors in Vista x86 and it doesn't seem to provide any increase in speed. Instead it makes PCSX2 unstable and crash quite a bit. I managed to load KH to the same spot as before using XP SP2 compatability mode (and 256 colors enabled) but it looks identical to the 31fps screenshot only 3 fps slower- obviously it isn't doing the same thing that XP does with 256 colors enabled.

GT4 menus

(+) about 50% fps increase
(-) paintwork does not reflect anything in 256 color mode :/

As THC noted, all this tweak does is make the GS plugin think that alpha blending isn't supported. I'm sorta surprised the screenshots still seem to have pretty equal graphical quality, but I assume there must be some quality loss.

Eitherway, Zerofrog could just code an option into his plugin that manually disables/enables alpha-blending. It sounds like a good feature for a future version.
