8 Fps

Hey there,

I'm hoping someone can help.

I am trying to run PCSX2 (want to play MGS3), but for some reason I am only getting about 7 FPS?

I thought it might be the game, so just ran the bio and got the same.

My specs are:

Vista Home Premium
Dual Core E4500 @2.20GHz
1GB RAM
32 bit operating system
Geforce 7300

I have tried setting up following the noobs guide:
GDSx9 (MVSC 14.00 SSE2) 0.10.0 (tried selecting the newer ones but they didn't work?)

and all the other appropriate settings, including the advanced ones for the CPU.

Any ideas?

Also - would overclocking help out at all?

hmm..

You should definately overclock to atleast 3.0ghz since almost all intel core 2 duos go there pretty easily with boxed cooling.. You should be getting more fps than 8, maybe you should try the latest beta if you haven't already and enable speed hacks! Oh and try different compinations of plugins! ZeroSPU2 0.4.6 could work nicely for you.. http://www.pcsx2.net/downloads.php?p=publicbeta

So my PC looks ok to handle it then, as I was wondering if that was the case, or thought maybe I had the settings wrong in the config somewhere?

I may try that beta version, see if it works.....

Fixed it now, bit shaky but about 47 FPS.

Since you have a C2D, you should be using the SSSE3 version of GSDX9.

update all your plugins
enable the MTGS and dual core options in cpu config
try frame skip or VU skip options too
enable the NATIVE checkbox and disable texture filtering in the GSdx 0.1.9 config.

Ok - I've managed to get the SSE3 plugin (though I can't use the DX10 option)

I've enabled the MTGS and dual core options, entered the native checkbox and disabled texture filtering.

Hoever MGS is still running too slow to play. The cutscnes are very choppy, and actual gameplay is very slow.

So anymore thoughts, or is my PC setup just not good enough?

Yeah I was thinking that, but I want to get a new cooler before I do that. I've just got the stock one. Once that's in place I'm planning on overcloaking it to 3GHz.

Do you reckon that should be able to make the game playable at least?

Oh, I should note, I am trying to play the game off a disc, not an ISO, will that make much difference?

There's no real need to buy a aftermarket cooler unless your going for a 50% overclock or so, since C2Ds don't really put out that much heat. Check your temps right now with a program like RealTemp and if their 35-40C your good to go. Even though I personally do use a zalman cpu cooler when i run mine at stock speed, but that's simply because Intel's cheap push pin design pisses me off to no end.

Also, playing from disk simply wears out your dvd drive's laser and makes loading take longer (might also cause stuttering if your drive is real slow), so just use the provided iso plugin to rip an image of the game and play the game from that.

I've just checked and I have that installed thanks.

Thanks also for the link where to check my CPU, running at about 38/39C

I appear to be having trouble accessing the bios settings to overclock my CPU, I have an advent Foxconn 45GM/45CM, but can't seem to find them.....

I really want to play my MGS3 !!

Look for any setting with "FSB", there should be a advanced config menu or CPU settings page (sometimes you have to change a certain setting from [Auto] to [Manual] before the overclock settings pop up). I'm not sure about your board, but on mine its under "Jumperfree configuration", so just fiddle around with all the settings in yours (after you write down the defaults of course) until you find the fsb and CPU voltage settings. DO NOT TOUCH THE FSB TERMINATION VOLTAGE IF YOU FIND IT as it will cook your CPU if set too high. While your at it, click the "settings" tab on RealTemp and post your VID, since that's the CPU voltage that you probably want to stick close to as C2Ds don't require much volts to OC.

Also, I've never heard of that board before, but take a look in the case of your PC and just see if you have any decent sized heatsinks around the CPU. If it doesn't, you probably won't have much luck OCing as chances are that its a budget 50$ generic board (though the name of the board seems to be hinting a p45 chipset, which is more common in enthusiast boards). However if its got heatpipes and sinks all over the place, you won't have to worry too much about leaving voltages such as the NB and SB at auto and overheating (though I'm unsure of the quality of foxconn boards since, so you probably need to check for yourself on the net first). Since its a AGP board, i think you have to set some other settings manually as well in order to keep a stable video card, but i forgot which, so go google .

Oh yea, make sure to set the RAM manually to whatever specification that's printed on the side of the sticks (do NOT leave them on auto, as your motherboard will probably overclock and over volt them when left on auto).

EDIT: Go here and here to read up on the basics, since this is a pcsx2 forum not a overclocking one xD
