metal gear solid 3 slowdown

hi

just get my hands on mgs3 - but now my only option is to connect my ps2 via composite to my laptop - and the image quality is bad.

i tried pcsx2 - the game starts (it's PAL) and goes ingame. in the scene where snake hangs on the parachute the fps going down to 5 fps - if i skip this scene the emu seems to hang and after 1 minute or so the codec window appear - sloooooooooow (this problem was described in another thread but this one is closed).

i tried several builds an plugin configs - nothing changed - i tried with and without speed hacks - but i can't get behind this codec thing.

i tried the latest builds - my os is vista ultimate x64

Specs:

C2D T9300 @ 2,8 Ghz (for now), Geforce 9500M GS (i don't think it's to weak - i got many other games to run @ fullspeed or near fullspeed) - i saw members with much worst hardware than mine and they get higher framerates in this game.

any idea?

thx in advance

tried a notebook with vista x32 (home premium) and a t7500 (stadart clock) and with a 8600M GT (this card is similar to mine - but mine is a little bit faster) and the game runs @ 20 fps but also hangs on codec screen (used same revision of pcsx2)

Great,i just wanted to report that i beat the game today
Intel C2D E6750 @ 3.5Ghz,2GB ram,GeForce 9600GT,Vista 64bit
pcsx2 plugins:
official 1.9 gsdx in DX10 mode,1100x900/texture filtering..gives me about 10ish more fps over dx9 mode.
Gigaherz's SP2 plugin (with rama's mod svn72)-Dsound/nearest/buffer 1024-8/timestretch
Linuzappz ISO plugin 0.7.0
Speed hacks:rama's round mod (since i was too lazy to experiment creating pnach files with different r.modes to figure out which one he uses :P ),other than that nothing...speed hacks just f. up the game.
....and...the..."officialy unofficial" svn390..not the "playground" one.

Subsistence PAL version (SLES 820.42)
The game fps was quite good most of the time (40-50),but cutsecenes were slow (10-30 most of the time, but there were 50ish fps scenes too :P )
Someone said that the memory card saves don't work...um,they work fine for me.
But,there is one cutscene that uses some "other" kind of postprocessing at some point that freezes the game so i just had to skip it and continue
Another thing is the "nightmare" mini-game when you "save the game in jail, turn off the game and start it up again..if you want to".I ran it in software mode and it worked, there are some heavy effects there and gabest probably didn't nuke em so it freezes on harware mode :P.
The next issue is the glitchy water.Whenever there was glitched water the game had a bad habit of hanging so i used a lot of save-state-ing to get past those parts - they never crash the game,it's just a random hang and yu can use save-states when it hangs.
Yeah the pressure buttons were a pain since i have a logitech rumblepad2 controler on my PC and the buttons are not pressure sensitive but ok..that's my problem.
Some screens here i just made.I did this last battle about an hour ago today and was lazy to OC my cpu to 3.5 again from yesterday for that one battle so...these screens are on 2.66Ghz
Those who didn't finish the game should not look at the first 2 shots :P

the "metal gear" games on disc 2 work too but i didn't get the snake vs monkey to run at all,it's just black and that's it.
edit:never had any real crashes which indicate pcsx2 bugs, the cutscene and nightmare are graphical issues since it works in software mode, the glitchy water hang is the only thing that randomly happens and can be solved by using save states often :P

I can confirm they dont work with both ntsc and pal versions of snake eater. It always says save failed. May be subsistence uses different type of memory cards?

Which part of the game is that? Can you post a screenshot ?

it hangs only if you are using speed hacks. Never hanged for me.

May be a problem with dx10 mode? coz in dx9 mode cutscenes never showed such massive slowdowns.

Which version of the game you are trying? Make sure you are running it from an iso. Avoid using any speed hacks.
Since you are using latest gsdx so I dont think thats the problem.

I use the PAL Version of the game (DVD says SLES 82032). I tried both, DVD and ISO. In Hardware Mode (latest GSDX 851 SSE 4.1) i got some stripes all over the screen (they don't appear in software mode). I tried DX9 mode, other sound plugins and so on - the same config, which r working 4 my friend (i just copied my pcsx2 folder) don't work 4 me.

today i'd installed vista x86 and the problem is still present. i tried also SSE2 and SSE3 builds of GSDX (both modes)... nothing changed.

the notebook from my friend have an T7500 (which i had in my old notebook too) and i an T9300 - my cpu is faster, my graphics is faster my whole notebook is faster... but this damn game is slower... mgs2 e.g. runs fine.

with zerogs i can skip this codec sequence but it's slow and buggy.

i am at a loss what to do...

tried several drivers... for sound, graphics and chipset... tried official builds wiht and without speedhacks - and unofficial too...

there is just one hint... but i don't know how to understand this (i know it's related to the graphic card... but just as i posted above - i'd tried several drivers)

looks like your CRC isnt added into post process removed list yet. Find out CRC of your game, post it in this thread and request gabest to add it to the list.

I can doubly confirm that mgs3: subsistense (NTSC) save states are working for me. They weren't working in older svn's but i tried one of the newer ones and it does work.

ill give Snake Eater (NTSC) a try in a moment.

Save states work.

And it's true that DX10 mode in GSDX would take quite a hit. MGS3 work best with DX9.

I think you mean actual memory card saving and not save states because savestates have been working perfectly for ages.

Um,yeah...then it looks like memory card saves don't work on "Snake Eater".
Screens, made in software mode because the game hangs in hardware

So the freezy cutscene is the one when you steal Raikov's outfit and meet up with Sokolov. Then there is this "flashback" of the thing that happened 2minutes before the talk, that freezes.
The second (well a gs snapshot) shows the nightmare mini-game.
Both freeze in dx9 and dx10 mode,official 1.9 gsdx
I ran the game first in dx9,had some crapy glitches and switched over to dx10 and ingame it works faster than dx9...didn't test the cutscenes in dx9 lol,I'll try..tho i don't remember it was any faster when i was looking at the cutscene pack before the freeze
About the water.I only had rama's round mode mod on....i guess i'll just have to manualy "pnach" every type untill i find the good one
edit:nope, almost same fps with dx9 and dx10,with the later one being a little bit faster (frame or two)
It could be me,it could be Vista,I don't know...

oops right.

yeah my memcards actually have been working perfectly now. I think it was cuz i reformatted them in the bios + using a newer svn. Strange cuz saqib hasn't put his memcard fix in the svn, but its working now.
