PCSX 1.6 Beta request...

Hello,

This message is mainly for the emu coders. I'd like to know if I could post a compiled win32 binary of PCSX 1.6 beta, for the people who can't compile it themselves, + the fact that it's now not being worked on anymore... I'll await an answer before doing anything

Re: PCSX 1.6 Beta request...

Since PCSX is licensed under the GNU General Public License, you have the right to do this without even asking them provided you either 1) make no changes to the source before compiling or 2) release the source to your changes.

Since the authors chose the GPL, they most likely decided then that you should be allowed to do this.

Of course, it is still very good of you to ask and get their opinions on it.

I do not represent the authors in any way of course

You could change the source greatly, that's the benefits of having a Open Source project.

Yes, but he would have to release his new source as well.

He couldn't change the source greatly, compile it, let people download the binary without letting people download his altered source; that would be a violation of copyright (under the GNU GPL)

There is absolutely no need to ask them as long as you comply to the GPL. Those guys at the FSF who invented the GPL had a very clear idea about what it means to put some software under the GPL. I think it's very nice to inform them, because most OpenSource authors are very happy when the learn that someone else likes their project, and does not only passively use it, but (in some manner) improves and distributes it. On the other side, I don't like the idea that people somehow feel that they must ask before they copy and/or modify GPLed software. The whole spirit of free software says: You may do that, you don't have to ask. You are free to do that. You are not in the mercy of the copyright owner to allow or disallow that.

P.S. I write this statement with greatest respect for the work of the PCSX team.

Re: PCSX 1.6 Beta request...

I was asking because as most of you prolly know, they don't want people to do it with Pcsx2 I just wanted to be sure I'll post it soon, I'll make a new thread for it. It's not modified at all (maybe I'll try that later), It's mainly for those who wants to try it.
