Can't run exe's

Ok after a bit of time away I decided to try out PCSX ver 1.4. I was very impressed by how much it had improved especially with respect to sound. The thing I really loved about PCSX is that you could load a exe (a demo or intro) reset, load another one, then run it without having to exit the program (like some other emulators). This would also save the trouble of re-browsing for the demo directory. When I try load an exe/psx with the new version however, it just hangs and I have to reset with the task manager. Is it just me? I tried the old version (ok 9.250 really old) and it still works. Any suggestions?
