PS2 Dragon Quest VIII

If you guys haven't heard of the Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest series then I'd think about refinancing that rock you live under. It's only Enix's flagship title (ie the Enix Final Fantasy) and it rapes the FF games in terms of sales in Japan (FFX-2 has sold 2 million copies in Japan, in comparision DQVII sold over 4 million). Unfortunetly, the game has a very limited following overseas. But that might soon change considering DQVIII's new look and the fact that Level 5 is the developer (of Dark Cloud 2 fame). DQVIII might be the game that breaks the DQ series into the US. One can only hope. And now without further ado, the screenshots.

That's all for now. More Gohan with a sword to come soon.

Re: PS2 Dragon Quest VIII

I'm only putting up with the cel-shading (or whatever that look is) because it's Dragon Quest. I just hope the game keeps the mechanics I've come to enjoy. I can put up with bad graphics if the game itself is good.

Re: PS2 Dragon Quest VIII

lol....Ryos....haven't we been doing that up to this point? We have come to expect bad graphics from DQ games....it only meant more emphasis on gameplay and story....this new graphics concept kinda throws that formula off

Well I for one happen to like cel-shading when it's used properly (ie Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter). Ryos, do yourself a favor and pick up Dark Cloud 2, I bet it'll rapidly change your mind when it comes to CS. As for DQ8 itself, honestly is ANYONE surprised that it's cel-shaded. Makes perfect sense to me, the series has always had a anime flair to it (thanks in part to Akira Toriyama of DB/Z/GT fame) so CSing just seems like a logical progression. This isn't a Final Fantasy game after all (still, for striving to be uber-realstic one must ask themsevles, Lulu's can't be natural can they? )

Also, the composer of the anime Naruto will be handling the DQ8 OST.

Let's hope the Naruto influence doesn't go into the game elsewhere. I couldn't cope with long drawn out flashes of main characters faces for hours on end.

I can understand if you don't like cel-shading on other video games but I don't see the problem with it on this game because it looks like an interactive anime. I hope more cel-shaded games look like this.

Re: PS2 Dragon Quest VIII

I'll play it if they remove that horrifying enter menu to talk and that lousy battle system like the first games had. DQ is prolly the worst game in existence both game and story wise.
