Those shots are jaw dropping!

However, the physics seem to be seriously limited for now. All you see are rigid high tech forms. I heard they implemented rag-doll physics for the zombies and barrels in the game, which is nice, but if you can simulate cloth, snow, or rain accurately, I'd drop my jaw twice as far.

Actually I don't think the character models have as many polys as UT2k3 characters, but they do have better bump mapping, and lighting effects.

I don't remember the specifics, but the programmers fixed it so that the lighting effects get calculated on a really high poly character and then that light/shadow pattern gets used on the lowwer poly characters(the ones you see in the pics). That way you get really nice lighting effects on low poly characters that don't need a really fast PC to run.

I'm probably not completely right about all that, but the game does something similar to what I described there.

The high poly model was used to produce the bump mapping for the lower poly models IIRC.

The engine can handle it, it's just not implemented in Doom 3 because no one's machine would run it.

I also heard that Doom3 will also be on XXXBOX. How can that be? on a 733MHz celeron!

Because the XBox has much less overhead than a PC.

But damn! The graphics are amazing...but there is some stiff competition.....Unreal 2......

Unreal 2?

The screen shots someone posted looked very generic, like every other fps out there. Doom 3 had much more atmosphere with its hard shadows, bump-mapping, and dynamic lights. Id-software really has little to worry about.

The Unreal 2 engine is dated next to the Doom3 one, and as such I think the same trend will ahppen as with Quake 3: More gameson Unreal at the beginning, then all the games move to iD's engine.

Just my 2 cents: these screenshots are in-game ones, right? Must be running on other hardware, as the shots I've seen from the you-know-what-thing hardly resemble the shots here. And the shots (the one from the you-know-what-thing) are allegedly running on P4s over 2 GHz+512MB RAM+GF4Ti/Radeon 9700 and they still look crappy. Not to mention low frame rates.

Syed Fawad, listen to carnage179 about the you-know-what-thing.
You do not need to know which shots are from it (if any are) and you don't need to what it is about. Trust me, you don't. Just drop it and let it be. Thanks.
sincerely,

The Doom 3 engine is basicaly a DX 8 engine. The UW engine is a DX7 engine. Need I say more?
Duke's engine supported a couple of games, and IMO lost out to Quake in the long run.

I kinda now know what that means. And also I find it quite useless for me. I'll leave it. Sorry for your troubles.

The Unreal engine is old. It's like rying to upgrade a morris minor when a new Ferari just arrived.
