yeah, if you have a card that supports vertex shaders (either a Geforce 3, ATI 8500, or Better) you can to turn on all the features with less penalty to the CPU

here is the Carmack quote from gamespy
"The GF4-MX is a very fast card for existing games, but it is less well suited to Doom, due to the lower texture unit count and the lack of vertex shaders.

On a slow CPU with all features enabled, the GF3 will be faster than the GF4-MX, because it offloads some work. On systems with CPU power to burn, the GF4 may still be faster. "

also with reguards to a 500Mhz system with a GF2-MX, is probably unsuitable for this game 1 FPS indeed

You are also slightly mistaking about the lighting. No lighting work is done the models. Unlike in any previous 3D engine, all lighting is done real-time, in-engine. There are no pre-rendered "light maps" or anything. So now light is scalable, stackable with other lights, etc. Before any lighting had to be anticipaed and pre-rendereed.
Heh, I knew I'd get some facts wrong there. I was trying to recall the way it was explained to me by a friend who knows loads about game design. Anyway what I was thinking was that the real time lighting was cast on the high poly models, but the light pattern from the high poly model got used on the low poly model in real time. Uhhh, I think I just confused myself even more.

Funcoland is starting to take reserves for the new Doom 3. However, many people are being turned away because of their system specs

What. I'll be glad if it runs at 1fps . Im expecting something like 1 frame per 3 seconds.... My system runs morrowind at 4 fps at the start, when in the boat. Im glad I lend most games from my friends first to see if it works on my pc before buying any

From what I can tell (unless things change). The minimum specs where it will be playable and enjoyable are a GeForce2 (not MX), and about a 1Ghtz CPU. Any lower 3D card does not support bump mapping which is essential and a lower CUP would probably start to kill the frame rate. (Unless you ran it at 240x320 or something...) Carmack mentioned that there would be a "GeForce 2 compatibility mode" to get this to work. He also mentioned that he is aiming for the game to run at about 35 fps at 640x480 on a GeForce 3 with ~1.5Ghtz CPU. (which is my current system...)

with everything turned on 35 FPS is fairly respectable for this sorta game but at 640x480 res ouch  (wow, this resolution remindes me of my Quake 1 gaming days) now I know why Id used a 2 Ghz Intel + Radeon R300 for the game at E3.

You're gonna be thinking for a while. I would not expect this thing out for at least a year.

Yeah. I might buy a new vid card by the time this thing is out. (There will probably be at least one generation beyond the ones coming out over the next few months.)

Someone showed me this site which has quite a few pics from DOOM 3 that I hadn't seen before. They're not high res but still cool.

And if you haven't seen the Doom3 Legacy video clip you can get it by clicking this guy-->:rockets: You just need to become a member of the site by making up a name and password and then login in with it. Beware the video is around 80Mb.

Bring on the BFG10K
