By the way, to be on topic, does anyone know why my screenshots for this game come out dark? I thought it was because it was really dark time in the game, and I toggled it to day time during build mode, but they even come out dark during the day. Then again, I'm using the PrtScrn key, and in The Sims 2, that just gives you a capture of your desktop (at least it did for me).

Did you use FRAPS raksmey1309? I'm using Windows 7, and still have yet to upgrade from the beta to the release candidate, so I didn't bother trying to install FRAPS to try and see, since I'll likely do that reinstall withing the next few days. Is it due to my drivers (the 1.1 nVidia drivers for Windows 7).

Otherwise, I'd have added some screenshots to this thread myself.

For now, the lack of stuff will make it seem like a step back to anyone with a whole boatload of stuff on The Sims 2, but The Sims 3 really does improve alot. Almost most importantly, EA seems to have noticed the want for customization and matching. You can style almost anything in alot of ways. There's some things that are steps back, like the Sims not getting into cars, and the lack of stuff versus The Sims 2 and everything available for it now may make the game seem unfinished, but that's grabbing at straws. You feel more immersed with the whole town being loaded and the whole world going on around you versus just one lot (with either fog or poorly detailed blurry blocky buildings in the background), and the time of day subtly changing (rather than either just day or night) adds to the immersion, and the graphics themselves are quite a bit better (not as much technically as visually, but it's the latter that matters anyway).

I'm not even a heavy player of the games and I disagree with your "skip this sequel" comment.

Edit: By the way, to the topic starter, both the controls and camera work just as they did in The Sims 2, no? The only difference I found was the sensitivity for camera when rotating seemed lower, but it's not a deal breaker.
QFT.

The Sims 3 is a great step up from The Sims 2. While TS2 didn't entertain me for more than a few days straight in terms of actually raising the sims (building was always fun, even more so with TS3), TS3 is actually a bit more challenging. Also, by being able to explore the whole neighbour hood, its no longer looking after your house where the sims happen to live, but rather looking after your sims wherever they may be. The traits and moodlet additions also radically alter your experience from TS2, and thankfully its also a welcomed improvement.

The graphics aren't exactly overhauled, but there is an improvement on the character models. They are very bareable, decent even. The game was never geared at hardcore gamers, and it never will be. Much like Spore, its a bubbly little game that allows you to escape in your own little world.

its using an abnormal method to draw images to the screen. You will need to use the ingame method of screen shots instead.

For one, as was said, the box version doesn't have securom. The downloadable version apparently does, but the one most people will be getting won't even have it at all. You didn't even know that. It's clear you haven't played the game, nor like the game, and know nothing of it outside the stereotypes, so I ask again, what exactly is your intention in this thread, or is it just the obvious trolling? If the title doesn't interest you, why did you even enter this thread to begin with? I'd really like to know.

Seasoned gamers? Oh, so people who play games that you deem not as games are less of gamers? If you were a "true gamer" as you're projecting it, I'd hope you'd know that any gamer is a gamer. Otherwise, if what you're hinting at and acting as is a "seasoned/true gamer", I'm sure many of the rest of us are glad we aren't "gamers"! You even bring gender into it. You're shaming all gamers everywhere when you act that way.
I was done with it until your fairy-ass dusted it's keyboard in my face, now it's to piss you off. Should I prove more points or let you keep being a goody-two-shoes for backing up whatever cause you think labeling a "gamer" has?

And no, gender isn't the issue. It's called "getting the freeway moving". Not to mention that capitolizing on the world by the "wal-mart" of video game developers doesn't help a thing. Have some backbone, eat a steak, smoke a cigarette or whatever you have to do and stop being such a pansy. If nothing other than that then just put me on your ignore list or whatever the blasted forum calls it so you never have to vomit legible ego-trash at how unagreeable you seem to think I am.

my sister got it today.

Disk/Boxed version = No DRM type protection, CD Check + Serial only.

Sim models and detail looks fairly good even at low settings.

of course, Low on Sims 3 is probably the Medium-high of sims 2.

Ungh, dude, you came into this thread and blatantly started stirring up issues with your trolling, and because I wasn't going to have it, I called you out on it, you now you're trying to backpeddle and say that "you were done with it" and push this onto me? I think it's pretty clear what's happened here.

This is a case of crying foul when something you started backfired on you. If you didn't want to get into anything, why did you troll the thread? Think about that one, will you?

P.S. By the way, you haven't proven anything to me except your intolerance towards others with different ideals (coming into a thread to troll something you don't like, your mockery of those who do enjoy it with your "seasoned gamers" comments, your mockery of me, your recommendations for me to "change my ways", should I go on with proof?).

Also, you haven't made me angry at all. I do question how angsty you seem though.

I don't get a Black screen. It's just darker than normal. I've tried taking two or three screenshots, and they all came out dark. I noticed yours in the first post are normal, and was wondering if maybe you used FRAPS, or if something else on my end was amiss.

So far... graphics.. sort of decent... performance scaling isn't as good as i'd like but i guess a single core athlon xp with a Geforce FX isn't the strongest :P

Wow, you really have some serious issues with me, for whatever reason. The feeling isn't mutual. I don't hate you, but I don't care for you either. I just wonder why you're so angsty towards me. Part of me continued to see if I could find out why.

Look, I never had intentions of getting into anything. I come here to discuss hardware, gaming, and emulation, and that's what I'm going to go back to doing. I could care less about arguing (at least in this way). Arguing only happens when two people can't get along, and I refuse to take part in this any longer. For that reason alone, I'm done.

It's been impossible to discuss with you anyway. You completely dodge what I say and just kick up more dirt time and again, and the discussion is so far off track now. That's why I'm done with it. You were doing nothing but trolling, and I shouldn't have even replied to you for that reason alone. Maybe if you figure out what your anger towards me is from, and decide to be more mature (and tolerable!) in the future, we can have a better discussion with one another.

Get over it? Done.

I'd wager the GPU is holding things back more. It requires a shader model 2 card, and on nVidia's end, the GeForce FX is is the lowest card to support it, and we all know how shader model 2 support was on the GeForce FX series.

In other words, you're basically using just a tad above the minimum requirements as far as the GPU itself goes. Some onboard GPUs work, but they need alot of CPU power (like 1.8GHz of a whole core of a Core 2 CPU alone) when paired with the onboard GPUs (which aren't many) that it supports.

You can disable the advanced SM2 effects, but i'll try forcing partial precision using DxTweaker. might improve performance somewhat.... I literally got more performance in farcry.

Welp! To each his own; immaturity is in the eyes of the person judging it. As far as I'm concerned, you're just as immature as I might be to you.

That is my opinion and with that; I ditto your "done" reply.

I still believe The Sims 2 has more gameplay opportunities, and I'm not gonna get another 10 expansion packs for 3 to even the playing field.

In addition, somehow my computer hit 101c on TS3. It's never even gone CLOSE to that high before. I've ran Fallout 3 and L4D on it at 77c.

Okay, it's time to cast Curaga on this thread. Here's a few (more like a whole boatload) I've taken. I was going to start a a new thread and remembered there was this one. I've become quite addicted to this game, but I spend most of my time simply building houses. Here's some I've built. The ones made by me are the four in the first screenshot, and then the lone White one near the end. Anything in the background or caught in the crossfire is stock game material. The larger four story house may seem overdone, but it was actually originally a two story house. I just tacked on two more since I plan to have a large family (about 8+ sims) living there.

The in-game settings are maximum at 1600x1200, and along with that, I have AFx16 and transparency AA set to multisampling (it helps with fences, railings, and some foliage a bit). They're resampled down to 1280x960 due to size limits.

Overall, the game's pretty good. It got me slightly addicted from being just slightly interested. There's changes from The Sims 2 that many users don't like, but overall, it's taken many steps forward and changed the formula for the better. There's things that have so much potential that it's a shortcoming that they aren't there or done, but they aren't necessarily "bad" things.

I think a lot of people are playing it wrong. Kinda like how Broderbund got SimCity wrong by thinking it required goals so that players can 'win' the game. You actually have to view the thing as a sim, trying to game it will have you grow weary of the product in say... 2-3 weeks.

I think a nice example is the Alice & Kev blog, which explores the lives of a homeless family with no money. Some of the things the sims do when you're not controlling them can be suprising.
