New to this stuff - in need of advice

HI, i have a question that involves creating emulators? I've never tried anything like this, and i have no idea what it involves or anything!! What i want is to create an emulator for a sat-nav. I have an image of a tomtom satnav's memory and i want to program something to emulate its interface so all the information on the image can be accessed through the emulator. I take it this is going to be bloody dificult? Can anyone give me any information on these types of projects or some resources i can research?
