Hitachi confirms 100 gig Blu-Ray disc compatibility with existing Blu Ray Players

GAME OVER HD-DVD.

Quote:
This is just to dispel some confusion surrounding the compatibility of 100 gig Blu Ray discs on existing Blu Ray players including PS3. With a firmwire update all the existing Blu Ray players including ps3 could also be made to play the 100 gig Blu-ray discs.

Here is the official statement from Afterdawn:-

"To sweeten the pot even more, Hitachi says the discs are compatible with existing Blu-ray players and drives after an easy firmware update. "

The much anticipated 200 gig Blu-Ray disc is also on the way to make inroads against the competition . Afterdawn further reports :-

"Hitachi says they are now working on "improving the signal quality of its quad-layer technology" so that it can be ready to hit the market soon. The company also boasted that they were working on a eight-layer Blu-ray disc capable of storing 200GB of data. "

Wow is bluray confirmed to support 100GB discs now? Down with HD-DVD!!! I've waited long enough for some media that is a lot bigger sized than puny 4.3GB DVDs and if only this HD-DVD vs Bluray war could end sometimes the prices of the media would go down quickly and in some year or two it would cost as much as DVD almost.

...?!? Even the smallest HD-DVD is three time the size of a "puny 4.3gb" DVD, not sure why you're still looking for something bigger, hell the double-layer blu-ray is 10x that size, as far as ''lot bigger sized'' this wins the cake.

And if you expect the war to end because of 100GB disc, you're going way too fast, it's one thing to talk about 100gb, it's another thing to actually USE IT.

Only half of the movies being released use the 50gb Blu-Ray while the other half use the 25gb. You shouldnt expect all of a sudden to see every movie being released in 100gb version if they are already slow to use 50gb.

After that, you gotta think about exactly WHO the 100gb will attract, keep in mind that to FULLY appreciate at 100% the quality of a 50gb movie, you already need a frikin good TV.

Now, how many customers will have the need for a 100GB movie, when the majority (by this I dont mean EVERYBODY, only more than 50%) can simply enjoy a 25/50GB movie with a perfectly good quality?

To make the blu-ray win the war, the 100gb better gives some awesome BJs, otherwise it will only be "one more gadget" for peoples who like techologies, but nothing to really think about now for customers, which aint enough to ''win a war''.

And finally, as far as price drops... If the blu-ray wins the war, you really expect the prices to fall down? The best way to make the prices fall down is for the war to NOT end, if Sony eliminates the HD-DVD (which could possibly happen, but not soon) they won't have any reason to do any big price drops when they can simply rakes in the money, keep in mind Sony is losing money with the PS3 not making money so keeping the blue-ray at a high price if they have the monopole would be a great way for them to even the losses easily.

But if the war keeps on going, Sony will keep on reducing the price to make sure they stay competitive.

All I have to say is if new technology comes out and gives consumers a better experience no matter if it is either movies or video games, the technology will be adapted and be used.

Simply put.

looks like a hardware discussion

userfriendliness is the most important factor. i dont see that shown in any HD-age numbers. Increasing the gap between DVD and the 'succesors' isnt likely to gain much support if too many restrictions are STILL enforced. Bluray is the least userfriendly among these 2.
Long before, Betamax failed on user adoption.
Not long ago, PDD (Profesional Disc for Data, basically an earlier clone of Bluray made by Sony AGAIN, failed miserably for similar reasons, and is now discontinued)

DVD more than enough here for anything, especially with x264 and the likes. The HD-age can soo go to hell, even 500 GBs discs aint blinding me into jumping from the cliff. Optical disc players stealthily connecting to internet is where I draw the line. Such "feature" isn't needed or wanted, the same way noboby needs higherquality spware installed in their comps ;p

Betamax failed because Sony didn't support the porn industry.

/me points to his signature

I have to agree with most of the points HCR makes. In addition to dual standards means that Joe Average doesn't want to adopt either yet. He buys what he knows will definitely be supported in the future (AKA DVD's). In the end all this bickering could end up sending both formats the way of the laserdisk.

sigh, and i thought it was common knowledge now....
There WAS adult vids for betamax, and plentily enough too. While the no-porn theory as the downfall of betamax is amusing, it is *false*. eBay and others still list betamax p0rn.
The p0rn industry is too small to have any lasting impact on *standards selection*.

Quote:
According to Forbes.com, adult video income is approximately $1 billion. "The industry is tiny next to broadcast television ($32.3 billion in 1999), cable television ($45.5 billion), the newspaper business ($27.5 billion), Hollywood ($31 billion), even to professional and educational publishing ($14.8 billion). When one really examines the numbers, the porn industry — while a subject of fascination — is every bit as marginal as it seems at first glance."

Wow...if they could market those 100 gig discs cheaply enough....along with the burners....they would be useful for data storage and/or backup!

You won't have enough space for some 1080pi fansubs on bluray and you'll have to upscale from 720! Peoples are gonna complain Kongo-Sama left ear was jagged when he was spying on the girls in the hot-tub.

(why would anyone look at his ears when there's girls in a hot-tub? Dunno, don't question why geeks look at things like that at moments like that, it happens, thats all!)

HD-DVD lost the game along time ago, as sales show. I just hope they bury it soon... they're recent moneyhat to Universal only screwed users over.
