Anyone know anything about car stereos?
I have been thinking about installing a cd player into my 1996 chevy beretta.
Autozone, along with many online sites report that my stereo type is 1-din, but looking at 1-din stereos on a lot of sites, they look way to short to fit my car. However, a couple of the 1-din types look big enough. A buddy of mine said it might actually be 1.5din, but I'm not sure. Anyone familar with this model of car happen to know what kind of cd player I should buy?

Just buy a casette that converts audio from your MP3 Player/IPod/MP4 Player/Zune. Casette players are dirt cheap, and this MP3 Player to Casette thing costs bout $10 at most meaning you could use the money on speakers instead.

My cars radio is AM/FM only. No cassete.
I've tried a FM transmitter, but there was too much static.

I hate those "pimped cars". I just want a decent car with a decent sound system.

Not sure what 1-din and 1.5-din is. I just went and picked out a stereo I liked (pioneer 2900). It fits just fine in my VW.
Here look at this wiki. Just measure it to see the size and if it's 1-din (50mm high) or 1.5-din (75mm high) opening.

Hmm.. oddly enough, single-din is the same size as mine. They still seem to look a little short in the pictures, but that might just be me.
This is the one I am thinking about getting, nice price-to-feature ratio.. Virtual Reality Sound VR3 CD Player w/ USB and Scan Disk Inputs - Wal-Mart Thanks for the link btw.

I bought mine at wallmart. It was $109 at the time. Plus 2 Sony 4-ways for the front and some cheap a$$ dual cones for the back (only thing they had that would fit). After it was all said and done I spent around $150.
All installed by me. My advice to you is get a wire harness adapter. I needed one for my antenna. If you feel like cutting wires (what I did) don't cut the hot wire and the ground wire at the same time

So are you gonna pay a professional? Or do it yourself?

If it's 1.5 DIN you can sometimes get an adapter to get it to single-DIN. I'm looking to do some of this myself, though I'm going with a double-DIN touch screen + DVD to replace the stereo (a PC is embedded behind a panel in the side of the car with a USB radio)

Not true. Double-DIN stereos will not work in single-DIN cars. I spent months trying to find a double-DIN touchscreen for my previous car... best I could do was single-DIN plus a 1/2 DIN with a new custom console replacement.
However, any single-DIN stereo will work in single-DIN cars... as long as you have the required depth. I recommend you investigate your available depth before you go out and buy one...

If an appropriate converter isn't easily available in the stores, it does not mean you can't install the radio and have it fucntionally work with speakers and an amp, etc. One can make their on converter by patching wires carefully guiding themselves with a tester and running new wires. I've even seen car stereos in walls of apartments... lol
