A Cure For Diabetes

I already posted this in the "A cure for AIDS" thread. It's not as big as news as the potential HIV cure (it is to people who have diabetes) but I think it's big enough to make a thread about it.

MyFox Washington DC | Pigs May Provide Cure for Diabetes

Washington, DC -- Pigs may hold the cure for a life-changing disease!

A local father's persistence could one day help his son and the over 20 million Americans struggling with diabetes live a life without worry.

Michael Gretschel volunteers as President of the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation, a DC-Based nonprofit which has donated millions to finding a cure. Michael's son Christian was diagnosed with diabetes at 2-and-a-half years old.

Islet cells produce insulin and are found in the pancreas, which is damaged in diabetes patients. The problem is there just aren't enough healthy cells available for everyone who needs them, so scientists are turning to an unlikely source: pigs.

Inside the DRWF Islet Resource Facility “Home of The Spring Point Project” state of the art lab in Wisconsin, scientists are raising pigs that drink sterilized water, eat sterilized food, and breathe filtered air. When ready, their islet cells will be harvested.

Researchers hope that one day, diabetics may be able to receive these pig islet cells during a 20-minute outpatient transplant every few years and live otherwise normal lives.

Within three years, the Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation
hopes to have a drug ready for FDA approval.
They also said that they tried it on a monkey and it worked and it might be available to the public within three years.

MyFox Washington DC | Top 5 Things You Need to Know

There's new help for people with diabetes. Experts say pigs could be the key to a cure. They say pig eyelet cells have already reversed diabetes in a monkey and could do the same thing for humans. They hope to start clinical trials on humans within three years.
A lot of great news in medicine today.

Great news indeed, and I just hope they'll make it accessible to the general population, with cheap medication and support.

Pigs bred in laboratory? Sounds curious enough.

I'm sure alot of these cures exist, but aren't known to the public, because the treatments themselves for the diseases generate too much money.

Wow, this has been an amazing week for curing diseased. I'm sure some animal rights activists will want to shoot this down for some reason.

And i'm sure some guy with diabeetus will shoot the animal rights activists down too
=D

In all seriousness though i doubt that this will be shot down by animal rights activists alone. Besides the fact that the pigs just get their islets transfered, they're living a very nice life: good food, good water, good air! That's like the life of a king pig (if pigs had kings o.O) I mean if thousands of people in america suffer from diabeetus (my dad and favorite teacher included D=) then why would they shut down such a massive breakthrough in medical research? (It's different than stem cell research because nobody is "killing" anything [and i use the term killing lightly])
The first statement is directed at BigIg, as a light joke, in case anyone else posted.

This man speaks the truth. It will end up in endless litagations, and 'clinical tests' before it is ever release to the public. There is simply to much money to be made on 'treatments' rather then cures.

I hate to say it, but we all know how money can affect a person's choices, and this is government at its finest, it will never fully see the light of day. All becuase some fat cat pharmacudical company and its board of directors have gotten used to a way of life that charging insane amounts of money provides.

My grandmother had diabetes, and she passed away from it. These turds have had the cure for alot of things for along time, but are just to greedy to tell anyone.

We do kill them right before we eat them anyways. It's not like pigs are like some protected animals like dogs, cats, and other household pets. Might as make them useful and get their islets in the process before they make them into ham and bacon. Plus the people who eat those pigs made to cure diabetes will be a little healthier anyways instead eating pigs who eat **** all day and have all types of cancer causing hormones pumped into their bodies. It's a win-win situation.
