A cure for AIDS

Indian doc develops enzyme that can destroy HIV

Quote:
Bangalore: Dr Indrani Sarkar has has every reason to be excited. Her PhD thesis, which started in 2002 at the Max Planck Institute in Dresden, Germany, has thrown open the doors for developing enzymes that can destroy the dreaded Human Immuno-deficiency Virus or HIV within infected cells permanently.

Indrani and a team of scientists have developed an enzyme called Tre. Tre is a custom enzyme capable of detecting, recognising and destroying HIV, much like a pair of molecular scissors.

"In laymans terms, it's an engineered enzyme which recognises sequences in the HIV genome that is duplicated, integrated virus and by the process of recombination, it cuts out the virus from the genome," says she.

The biggest challenge with treating HIV today is that the virus becomes dormant and often develops resistance to HIV drugs.

The only way then to cure HIV is to get rid of the virus completely and Tre, the enzyme that Indrani constructed after a year and its 126 "cycles of mutation" totally deplete HIV in the human genome in three months in laboratory conditions.

"It's a beautiful approach, but like any other drug, this one too will take a few years to reach clinics — anywhere between five and 20 years actually. A lot of research has to be done because since one is working with a novel enzyme, one has to engineer the enzyme," says she.

According to the latest statistics given out by UNAIDS and WHO, there are close to 39.5 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the world and though it will be a while before an imminent cure is likely, Dr Indrani Sarkar's findings certainly hold out hope for the millions who are battling the disease across the globe.
Finally, research leading to a cure to this stupid disease.

It was on Digg
I can bet the cure will "miraculously" be made prohibitively expensive enough so that the targeted populations could never get it.
If price doesnt do it, WTO surely will. Don't question the logic, btw

You could just jettison them into space, but I think the research angle costs less.

is it just me, or did the line before make more sense than the "laymans terms"?

either way, bloody good news! now they just need to cure cancer and the 2 biggest killers in the world today without a cure will be remedied.

I'm sure that's the plan. With all of these "medical breakthroughs" comes the issue of money, and the love of money is the root of all evil. And it's obvious that they don't care about Africans getting the cure.

Many of these disease cases aren't driven by monetary greed. Nuff said (*ominous black helicopter sounds*)

Yeah, but I'd rather search for the cancer solution first. AIDS is kinda controllable and avoidable (protect yourself and stuff, well, unless people whom are born with it), now cancer may come as a bad suprise... have seen lots of healthy people finding themselves with cancer. That's unfair and sad.

Great news.

Sounds better than the Dominican guy, yeah from my country, who said he found the cure for aids, without any knowledge of science.

It's important to not get terms mixed up here. This is an enzyme that destroys HIV before it can cause AIDS, not a cure for AIDS once the syndrome has set in. The two terms (HIV and AIDS) are often interchangeable, but in this case they should not be confused.

Essentially, this actually isn't a cure for AIDS, but rather a sort of "HIV Antibiotic."

Regardless, this is excellent news and I hope to see this in effect as soon as possible.

Don't jump that gun yet. Banting and Best sold the patent for insulin for just a single Canadian dollar, who's to say Dr. Sarkar here won't do the same?

I thought we weren't supposed to mention him anymore?

Anyway, about this, I wouldn't be to excited, because we've heard of "cures" before, even with a lot of promise, that never came true.

I hope something comes of this supposable cure. I would like to able to live a promiscuous lifestyle again. Seriously though, good to see something come out of the billions of dollars that was put towards AIDS/HIV research over the years. Some people without hope might still have a chance when/if it gets to the point where it can be called a definite cure, hopefully soon.

Anyways, as ref said, the next big step would be to find a cure for cancer as well. I don't know why cancer is so big nowadays. It was never like this a few decades ago. Now there's a cancer for everything. It must be common things that we use everyday for years on end that causes most types of cancer. Either that or pollution. Something that we use everyday without even thinking that one day it may cause us cancer. Just my blind theory without any real factual evidence.

I was only joking, won't hurt to mention or make jokes about him once in a while. Only thing that drew the line was those repeated threads and clones in the bin.

Only reason I mentioned it this time, was the aids joke akin to him as well as the Aids in a box joke.
