If the 360 is next-gen does that make the Gamecube this-gen and the Saturn last-gen?

Next-gen has recently started to seem like an odd phrase to me. Obviously The PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii were next-gen while they were still yet to be released. Even now though they still retain that title even though they are no longer "next" but "now" as far as the console market is concerned?

What I want to know is what counts as "this" or "last"-gen?

Its strange, people always refer to "This Gen" as "Next Gen" even tho its already here, then when a new range comes along, that will be considered Next Gen (which makes sense) and the current one will be considered "Last Gen"

So there isnt really a "This Gen" as such. Screwed up i know. NGEmu should change its name to "Gen before last emulation" ;p

Next-gen refers to the beginning of the "golden age" for emulation. You cant retrochange history, so it's staying Next-Gen.

Namely, PSemuPro and concepts it introduced, marked that milestone, especially the plugin-based specs and developping concepts, which contributed in keeping ePSXe and various other emus nicely functional, despite the lack of new versions for some.

It's not limited to consoles though. According to Sony there's a "next-gen" dvd format war "that's already been won".

I'd like to know who has a "this gen" anything.

Bluray did not and will not win anything, so HD-DVD looks like the only winner, if DVD doesn't remain sole winner actually. You cant force hostile tech on anyone,
The Bluray tech itself isnt "new", and was just a rehauling (with increased disc space) of Sony's professional backup disc format (which failed miserably quickly enough). Also, Bluray dissing/supporting isn't exactly relevant here, and to each his opinion anyway. Time will tell, as they say

In my eyes, PS3 and Xbox 360 are current get now, considering PCs are already starting to beat both consoles. Next gen isn't till Xbox 720 and PS4 now.

What's even more frustrating is that websites and magazines that consider themselves professional and serious say stuff like "The PC version of this game is awesome, but the next gen versions we still have to wait for"

WTF, seriously. "Next gen" isn't anything else than marketing slang used to indicated everything people had imagined from what the PS3 and Xbox 360 were supposed to do when they were announced back in 2004 or 2005.

"HD" is another phrase which falls into the same category. It's disgusting how many of such game reviewing n00bs at popular websites use these terms to label a game. Then again, since some time I have really had a problem finding a decent website, especially for PC gaming. Most seem to me as if they're advertising webpages that only highlight the good while ignoring the bad.

you're kidding right? i look in the shops, i see DVD (normal) or Bluray, Blockbuster, who are massive, have said they will only stock Bluray, the jap porn movie industry (i bet this gets most clicks ;p) is going Bluray, most of the normal film industry has chosen Blu-ray too.

Actually, blue-ray was ahead of HD-DVD for awhile, but HD-DVD is catching up fast.

Very, indeed. Free Bluray movies with PS3s are included, and Bluray PS3 games arent clearly defined in the chart. Given the PS3 constitutes about 80% of the Bluray installed bases, the fact 3 to 5 bluray movies were once (if not still) included with system purchases can be misleading, especially with those crazy spinmasters at Bluray
PS3 gamers arent likely to throw 60-70 bucks for movies every once in a while, when games could use that extra wealthiness.

Some stores took money to exclusively stock bluray, so this looks more like a desperation move, not some proof its popular. The same kind of money flew from the HDDVD camp, but thats not viewed as desperate, as theyre only securing current leadership, in a response to the bluray bribes.

Bluray movies/porn can survive as a niche market in japan, like UMD ones (Sony was forced to allow porn on UMD, as they were in no financial condition to contest on moral grounds), thatd basically be a difficultly warez-able disc format. The closed nature of gamecube discs didnt stop anyone from buying them, though they could only work in gamecubes If bluray fails as a movie format, something tells me PS3 warez figures will decrease significantly enough to please a few spinmasters.

To each his view anyway, and time will tell, but this gen thing is way overrated anyway. Dual layer/dualside DVDs do just fine, if people are really that desperate for disc space
