When your eyes are bigger than your pocket

I wonder have you ever been to a situation in which you wanted to buy something so bad, but couldn't afford without getting into a really bad situation? If so, what did you get, what was the downside? Was it worth it?

Well i've had some of these moments quite often
The last time was like 2 months ago when i got myself my gfx card (8800 gts 320) for around 300€ even though i only had 520€ for the whole month. I had to cook stuff that i can eat for several days the whole rest of the month . If i look back now i think it's kinda but i don't really regret it cause i love this card and how it performs

If anyone here knows anything about my spending habits you may have guessed that I get into these kinds of situations all the time.

And you'd be correct.

2002 - Spent lots of money on beer and CDs and went overdrawn numerous times in the process.

2003 - Bought new computer and was living on Frosties for two weeks. Also in August that year I spent a (at that time a record) £1200 in 20 days on a trenchcoat, clothes, minidisk player, Gamecube and a lot of games, and other miscellaneous student-loan-fodder pish.

2004 - Same as above (bought a new PC + tons of CDs and games) but since I was working at McDonalds at the time (6 days a week) I got free meals, and the parents paid the rent as well.

2005 - Kinda the same, but with a lot more games purchases. I bought a new case, graphics card and watercooling rig as well. I was living with the parents, so I was fed and had no outgoings.

2006 - One month I spent £500+ buying a new motherboard and graphics card, then I bought my PSP and a LOT of games for the PC and PS2. ALL within two days of my pay day. I spent the next three weeks selling some old CDs, DVDs and games to raise funds as I had £9.70 to my name. The next pay day couldn't come fast enough.

2007 - I bought a PS3 and a pair of Sennheiser HD555 headphones + another batch of games + CDs + beer a few weeks ago and now I've got £50 to spend until I get a job (probably within a month.)

The only thing I've ever bought that I really needed was my PC in 2003, as my 500Mhz wonder machine had broken down at Christmas. And with studying a software development course it's hard to do stuff without one (as you could imagine.) The recent purchase of my PS3 was something I've wanted badly since last year, and so far it's justified it's purchase.

Expect to see an addendum to this thread in a month or two when I post "2007 - 1080p HDTV. Eating Pot Noodles for the next two weeks."

When I bought my Bang & Oulfsen stereo second hand, I dont know if I paid more than it was new or not but I loved it, I say loved it, the remote stopped working and it started turning the volume down randomly(some safety feature gone mad) so I dont use it anymore, I regret buying it ( an entire months pay!) My camera is screwed so I cant take a picture and I cant find a picture on google that I can save to my comp, but this is the link to a breif reveiw of it if anyone cares Beocenter 9500, what impresses me is that it is nearlly 20 years old and still works!(more or less)

Same here, got my ps3 now I've got to make a serious dent in my bank account for HD telly. And pot noodles, I'd love to live off of them, most of the time I live off of Asda super saver sh1t noddles that cost 14p per pack, they taste like worming tablets.

My dad's TV (that broke down and went to Silicon Heaven in 2003) deserved a medal considering that it was older than me at the time. I remember him telling me that it was what he spent his first "real" wage on, along with his Hi-Fi. That TV was quite the warhorse, I'm quite sure they don't make them like that anymore.

Congrats on the PS3. As for the HDTV, check Play.com for their deals. Seeing how Samsung have got a new range of TVs coming out soon, you may get a cheap bargain as the old ones are cleared out.

I used to raid Iceland for their 5 for £4 deals when I was low on funds. They're usually good quality. In Galashiels they've opened a 24 Hour Tesco AND Asda within 100 freaking yards of each other. So I'll look around for their own brand noodles.

All this talk of noodles reminds me of Morrisons' tub of tomato and herb noodles for 20p each. I used to eat three of them a day.

lol no. And this stuff never happens to me. I dont go buy the latest and greatest until it becomes the crappiest and oldest. You could say I'm like 5 years behind. So game from 5 years ago are what I play and they run well. In 5 more years I'll play games from today... neat cycle isnt it?

Well that's usually also the way i do it but imo sometimes one can jump into the cold water and eat noodles for a while and enjoy what money can be used for. After all it's just time and energy you are giving away by buying stuff.

Though i've learned my lesson not to grab directly when some new stuff comes out, i haven't been disappointed by anything i bought recently except for the ram maybe. That was my last "buy before reading into it" mistake btw

@Coolvilleman

Same for me. I got the Mr. Scrooge syndrome. I have a passion for saving money. The only times I've went in a spending gallore was when I bought this laptop. One of the few investments I'll never regret Well my mom tells me I'm a spending freak because of the ocassional snacks/books I buy, so I guess I'm not the worst off in my family. ^_^

The same thing with games. 2 years ago I was discovering the gems the PSX had to offer for its time through emulation. Now I'm waiting a year more for PCSX2 to be more stable so I can play games from the PS2 era. ^_^

I want to buy the 8800GTX so bad.
If i buy one then I would have been skint.
and my landlord will most prob kick me out because i owe him a months rent.

So now I'm working my a$$ off to afford it,
plus I may also get a new rig to go with it.

The morale:

good things come to those who wait, but your life sucks in the mean time.

its not that its bad, its just for a FF, its different. i actually liked the battle system in that one over the one used in X, its much faster.

This isn't really along the same lines, but I bought my XBox 360 on a whim. I was working on a client's machine and needed some floppy disks. So, I went to Wal-Mart and came back with the disks and a 360.
