Why do smokers smoke?

I'm just curious, why do some people smoke? Are they even aware that smoking is bad for your health?(it can cause cancer or other health problems you know) Or maybe what could've made them think that it has benefits? I know some friends that smoke, they're addicted to it which prevents them from quitting. How can a smoker get rid of that addiction and begin a new life as a non-smoker?

Smoking is like chewing bubble gum to those smokers I'm pretty sure they know what smoking can do to them.

Well, it's like asking, why do we play console or PC games?

When you begin, you can't stop.

I don't smoke so I can't answer the question directly:
Some say that smokers take smoking as a habit
(the action of taking a cigarette out and lighting it up)
and others say that smokers are nicotine addicted;
most people say the result is the combination of both.

i started smoking cos i was surrounded by it party, but primarily i was going through a stressful time of my life, gf dumped me, cousin got murdered, amongst other things, so i smoked to try and relax myself a bit.

unfortunately as a result ive been stuck with it as an addiction. but then i dont mind smoking, i quite enjoy the odd cigarette.

haha
i just quite smoking like 2 months ago, so this question is perfect for me.

people do smoke for the addiction, but thats only a fraction of the reason. most do because of the calming affect that cigerettes have, with a stressful situation, or with anxiety, light up and in a few minutes your calm again.
i quit because i got tired of being out of breath all the time and having no energy.

in order for anyone to quit you have to make the concious decision to quit, you really need to want it. i think thats why so many fail they just dont have the commitment. i quit cold turkey, with nothing more then exercise and juicy fruit gum.

Well i've quit now for a month or so (stopped counting) and i feel better again. I started because a friend came to me and told me to pull on the cigarette cause he wants to see me coughing. Then i just did it, for many reason, because it can look good, because you've got something to do with your hands, because it's relaxing, because you can make funny stuff with the smoke, etc...

It's a chemical addiction, not much else to it. It's a shame that people throw away large amounts of money on something that has no positive benefits at all in their life and is likely to only incur much larger costs later on, but hey, it's their money.

I really hate the smell of cigarette smoke and I hate it when I'm somewhere that people smoke and it gets all in my clothes and eyes and it's just a pain. I'm happy whenever they pass some new law banning smoking somewhere that I like to go.

The dude I rent from smokes and drinks like there's no tomorrow, and has a very unhealthy diet. I'm amazed the guy's alive at all. When he dies it's gonna be a simultaneous heart attack + lung cancer + liver failure thing.

Tasted better than really cheap beer. Plus I started while I was drinking.

I continued smoking cause well I could and it was relaxing.

I like the smell of second hand smoke. Not when I smoked though.

BTW I quit some time ago.

That's how I started when I was 12. I didn't cough the first time that I tried it though. I was no wimp. I started out by swallowing the smoke and once I got used to that, I started inhaling the regular way. IIRC, it took me about a month to get addicted to it. I'm still struggling to quit right now. My goal is to definitely stop this weekend.

I don't see how it's cool.. Personally, I'd hide if I where to smoke.

Never have. Never will.

Ps. I HATE the smell of stale smoke. I also dislike beer and alcohol, not for moral reasons, it just tastes bad.
