I have always wanted to watch Saikano. I just forgot the name of it. I think I will watch it.

I'm still debating on Baccano. The story line seemed interesting but I'm not sure. I heard that it was quite gory and the story line was a bit edgy.

No idea bout saikano, I only know that the ending is tragic. :/

Baccano is a good one, the art is quite good and the story is intriguing. But, yeah, the story like to jump around, either jump to people, time or location a LOT. The gory part is not much, but enough to rival Higurashi sometimes.

hmm, i'll pass on Saikano.
i don't see the point in depressing anime, as I see anime as a good escape from depression (not the other way around).

anyways, i started Hajime no Ippo 2~3 days ago and I've already watched 35 episodes, so i guess i like it xD

i mean it could be better, but so far its been entertaining and its been good at keeping an exciting pace.

Seeing a sad story and projecting oneself in it is a perfectly method catharsis method though. Crying yourself out in a medium that you understand to be fictional is perfectly and therapeutically healthy.

That said, I also have difficulty starting series that I know to be depressing, so it's not like I don't know where you are coming from. Though in my case sometimes is just sheer fear.

Saikano is a very good series that perfectly stands on itself, depressing or not. I'd put it as one of the anime landmarks within the war genre of the 2000-2005 years.

Its from sankaku so I'm not entirely sure how trustworthy it is but still... Plus as its sankaku I'm not sure if I can post the link so I'll post it in spoiler tags and remove it later if I have to...

Nagaru Tanigawa “Has Started” New Haruhi Novel

Haruhi author Nagaru Tanigawa has finally started work on the long anticipated but hugely delayed (as below) “Suzumiya Haruhi no Kyougaku / The Shock of Haruhi Suzumiya” light novel, the first in many years.

Previous announcements relating to the title, once due in 2007, always turned out to be lengthy delays, to the point that the once popular series appeared to have been abandoned, but this seems not to be the case now, as in a recent edition of The Sneaker he is described as being in the process of readying the novel.

Whilst it seems for all intents and purposes the Haruhi franchise is finished after having been driven into ground, it will be interesting to see whether Tanigawa manages a worthy continuation after so long a hiatus.

There is of course the intriguing possibility that he long ago succumbed to writer’s block or totally lost interest in the series, and only now is finally having his arm twisted into finishing it, a possibility which does not bode well for the quality of future installments…
And yes I made a slight mistake it seems to be the novelist, not the mangaka...

And if you feel that the link should be removed, either remove it if you have "teh powa" or ask me to remove it!

Well, yes I have to admit Saikano did not end happily. Some people prefer to make the episode before the last is the ending, because... well... it softens the blow

oh c'mon, don't tease the newbie.

In any case, Boogiepop Phantom was for long my favorite horror stories. It got a lot of good elements, like a very wacky storytelling style coupled with a very eerie city sci-fi settings.

For series with a similar feeling, some arcs within the Ghost Hunt managed to spook me quite good. Other than that, the first season of Higurashi gives a similar feeling.

At last, Bakemonogatari achieves a new height of still image animation on episode 10, it's usually normal for a series to have one or two fugly animation episodes, but this...is...just...slide...show, and the OP (which is moe, btw) have more animation than the rest of episode. :/

Hopefully this is the last one Shaft screwed up, this series only have two episodes remained to be finished airing on TV. >.<

Apparently this is not the first case Shaft doesn't finish animating an episode in time? My personal solution? Drop the seriese til the DVD releases are out. I don't want to see a lesser Bakemonogatari personally.

Eh? Does quality differ from the tv version? This is the only Shaft anime I followed so I don't know about the other series, hope you enlighten.

Moon/phase tsukuyomi was another series where a chpater consisted almost entirely of stills, and they redeemed themselves with the DVD version with was flawlessly and wholly animated.
