proto i watched the anime; i didn't read the manga.

if i remember correctly, at the very end, it goes back to the first time Hikaru found the Go board... and basically ends in a loop.

but

Spoiler:
i agree that it was very tearful when Sai vanished away... I'm still not sure if i like it or not, since i usually like happy endings. Perhaps it would have been better if Sai and Hikaru fused together forever or something. It was too sad!

i read the real manga ending on wikipedia; and i think the manga ends better.

@cottonvibes:
Hikaru no go
Spoiler:

The very last moments of the anime series refer to the fact that Hikaru and Touya will continue battling into the pro go world. And in a sense, Sai fused into Hikaru, in the sense that Sai playing style as within Hikaru's. in a sense, it is a lesson about life, since it also show us that even when we die, we are alive within the impressions and things the new generations have gotten from us.

And the manga only goes on one more arc before finishing, so it's not a lot more. Personally I prefered where the anime finished.

from what i read in wikipedia, the ending seems better in the manga.

Spoiler:
The captain of the Korean Go team, Ko Yeong-ha(sometimes incorrectly spelled Yongha), is interviewed and his remarks translated for Japanese viewers. The translator makes an error which causes it to appear that he is disparaging the skill of Honinbo Shusaku, who, like Hikaru, was possessed by Sai. Although Yongha later finds out, he refuses to correct the error and instead emphasizes it when he realizes that it enrages Hikaru, who takes it as a direct affront to Sai. This leads to Hikaru eventually challenging the captain, and he loses by only half a moku (point). Japan eventually comes in last, behind Korea (1st) and China (2nd).

In the end, Yeong-ha asks Hikaru for his reason in playing Go. With tears in his eyes, he answers with the line "To link the far past, with the far future"
.

^^ the last thing hikaru says sounds really good; and its a great way to end the manga.

btw, i'm pissed that no-one ever played "the divine move"!!!!

i thought at the end he would play the move... i didn't even know what it was...

does it ever say what "the divine move" is?

I *read* the last arc in the manga, so I'm talking from first hand impressions And no, that wasn't really the end. There was an extra chapter after that that just ruined about everything.

And no, the divine move is just an utopia. Honda expressed it better by saying that the road of a pro is endless and has no goal. If you have played any similar board game like chess, reversi or shogi you should have a pretty good idea about it. There is no such a thing as the absolute perfect move. Just good moves on good games. Or you could say that perfect game (as in, the best possible moves each side could hope for) for both sides could be found. That makes more sense from an algorithmic level POV.

I heard the anime will give you the same sensation of banging your head against the wall. Honestly, it made me curious how that would be without actually doing it

Will give the anime a try someday. I have it stored somewhere already anyway, so might as well watch it. When it was airing there was a small hype around it, seeing the ratings the anime doesn't seem to have lived up to the hype...

So any anime of the new seaons that has been worth the try? I haven't really checked the line up, so quite clueless about which interesting anime will be airing this season. Will probably still give ZnT 3 a try despite the somewhat bad second season.

well if thats what it was supposed to mean, then the anime describes it terribly wrong.

the anime specifically calls it the "divine move" (or at least thats what its translated to), meaning its an actually move to be played and not a "divine game" or something of that sort.

wikipedia also says its 1 move to be played:
Divine move - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

if it was really just a perfect game, then the Sai vs Toya Meijin game probably would have been considered the divine move/game.
its been a while since i watched the anime, but i believe that match was pretty perfect, w/o any mess-ups.

@Sephi: Well, since you liked ARIA and you like series with good art, why don't you watch Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto: Natsu no Sora (Someday’s Dreamers), from the same company and with a very similar style?

Well, if that it's definition, then it's taking it down a notch from what i was considering it to be. It's not like there is "th3" ultimate move under that definition, rather extremely good moves that change the tide of a game (a "!!" in chess notation I'd guess). Hmm... it seems more like a pompous name than anything else

lol yeah, your definition did sound more mystical and enchanted

but since it was supposed to be 1 move, then i wish either Hikaru or Sai got to play it, since that's what Sai's ultimate goal was.

If that was his ultimate goal then he had already done it through the Ear reddening game and with Shuusaku.

well i guess in the anime, its assumed that game was never played

regardless, if you think about it, the whole anime doesn't make sense.
in the end, Sai's purpose was supposedly to just introduce Go to Hikaru.
but why is Hikaru so special? and what is the ultimate goal once Hikaru became pro?

if at the end, Hikaru becomes the best Go-player in the world, it kindoff makes sense.
but supposedly, he looses to the Koreans so hes not even the best.
the whole purpose of Sai waiting 2000 years to introduce Go to a boy who's not even the best seems stupid.

(maybe i'm just looking too deep into this though ; after all, its just an anime.)
