You wouldn't realize it while playing with most of the jerks that play Halo 2, but 64% of the nation's 117 million online gamers are actually women, according to Nielsen Entertainment's third annual Active Gamer Benchmark Study, released this morning.

The study's announcement release doesn't break down what games they're playing, though we expect sites like pogo.com, which feature a multitude of Flash-based, more simplistic games, are rather high on the list. Even more surprising is how many older gamers are playing. While the teenage market dominates in numbers, the study says more than 15 million gamers, about 8%, are actually at least 45 years old.

Americans have luck, they have a lot of girls gamers. I wonder if there are girls in this forum..

64% seems highly unlikely to me. I dont think people playing flash games count as standard gamers.

exactly. but I doubt most (not all) of them would play what people consider "real" online games. MMO's, FPS, RTS, etc. This is a very skewed study.

The study is just too broad and lacks focus.

70% of people who play games in the US are females, but that 70% play minesweeper, backgamon, flash games and the like.

They do however take the vast majority who play games.

well, i play kingdom of loathing regularly, and theres about as many women playing as men. but kol is alot different from halo... so it does look like they just count any sorta online game.

Keep in mind they mean any/all games that can be played online, not say MMOs and whatnot. I can buy that happening, there are a lot of stupid online games out there like the flash crap hushy's talking about.

I think some of the female characters on WoW are actually being played by females... it's shocking, why would one play its own gender in an online game?

Then, there's games like this of which I'm sure there are females playing it....
