This Saturday, Goudvishal Arnheim, the Netherlands: Graveworm!
This Sunday, Baroeg Rotterdam, the Netherlands: Graveworm!

May the worms have mercy on my eardrums. We hope being able to arrange being allowed to film the gig on Sunday. Usually we get to talk to the band, and they've always been very cool about making videos. Hopefully this time we'll be allowed to use a proper cam rather than my digital camera.

I feel this thread need bumped...

Just wanted to say after 6 years of not hearing the song I asked about in the beginning part of this thread, I've found it. See what not being lazy does? I've been listening to quo vadis a lot and it's great.

4 more days till avantasia, I love the song promise land, and must say this will have to be the best avantasia album yet. Also Khan from Kamelot will be lending his vocals, something I'm most excited for.

Heh, seems like I'm not the only one anticipating The Scarecrow. Here is a nice review to make you even more impatient

Well what do you know? The new Avantasia album is a fact and goddamn, WHAT AN ALBUM IT HAS BECOME!!! From the very first tunes of the opening track 'Twisted Mind' you find yourself on the edge of your chair and stay there for the coming 64 minutes. The song starts rocking almost immediately and has everything that makes Avantasia so special: powerful riffing, beautiful melodies, beautiful singing, excellent arrangements, catchy choruses, clear and powerful production and especially the genius combination of it all.
(...)
This album is almost totally different than 'The Metal Opera' and is fortunately not a typical power metal album; something that 'The Metal Opera' was a bit.
(...)
The vocal contributions of Jorn Lande, Kain Hanse, Michael Kiske and Bob Catly among others should not stay unmentioned and see to a high dosage of goose bumps regularly. But one of the most remarkable singers on this album has to be Alice Cooper, who put his stamp on 'The Toy Master', a role that no other could have done. Musically Tobi had help from Sascha Paeth (a.o. known from Luca Turilli and Aina), who has taken the guitars for his part and none less than Eric Singer (Alice Cooper, Kiss) on the drums. Besides that, Rudolf Schenker (Scorpions) has also played a couple of solos.
I was aware of Jorn Lande and Michael Kiske doing some vocals, they were on the Lost in Space EPs, but Kai Hansen That guy is my power metal hero, so that was an even bigger surprise, especially since he never was announced on the Tobias Sammet site. The Promised Land is definitely one of the catchiest songs I've heard in a while Aided. I don't think I need to tell anyone who has visited my LastFM page. Three godlike vocalists in one song...

So yeah, we've got:
Michael Kiske - Ex Helloween
Jorn Lande - Ex Masterplan (a must have album for heavy metal fans)
Tobias Sammet - Edguy
Roy Khan - Kamelot (never heard much of him, just one song, sounded good)
Eric Singer - Kiss (doing vocals as well)
Alice Cooper
Bob Catley - Magnum

I was really surprised with the voice of Bob Catley on the EPs, he was completely unknown to me, but I think his voice fits in so well with Jorn Lande, forming a great balance against those sweet higher range voices of Kiske and Sammet.

I've been listening some Quo Vadis as well last week, mainly because of my cousin letting me listen some of his Berzerker stuff, which is a bit extreme for my tastes. Quo Vadis still has more than enough melody for me to like it. And their drummer.... You won't believe it until you've actually seen it on live footage.

Btw Aided, you might like my latest videos from the Axxis/Gamma Ray/Helloween gig. Also, I managed to score some plectrums, making me happy as a little kid really. The people in front of me tried to catch the one Dirk Slächter threw (gamma ray bass), but failed. So I picked it up when I saw it shimmer. To my surprise this happened a second time, this time it was Kai Hansen who threw it. This really made a great night a perfect one

Today I got myself the new Iced Earth album, well, the one that was released last year: Framing Armageddon - Something Wicked Part 1

I'm already looking forward to the second part because this album sounds absolutely fantastic so far. People always told me to listen Iced Earth, and my first experience was actually Demons and Wizards. This stuff doesn't stray far off, especially not if you listen to the guitar riffs, it's very recognizable.

Truth is, I have a soft spot for concept albums with lots of interludes and a great atmosphere carrying the entire album, which is one of the reasons why I bought this album after having read only one review. But hey, the price of €12,90 helped as well

Being 68 minutes, I probably made a very good purchase, at least something to carry me over till my next albums: The new Avantasia and the new Ayreon.... Meanwhile, I have to study KoRn... I'll be seeing them within a week

I listened to the new Iced Earth, I love 10 thousand strong, LOVE that song, however nothing in the rest of the cd stood out. Maybe soon.

I love concept albums as well, still the best one for me is nightfall by blind guardian.

Korn? I guess you saw this coming from me cid. WTF?! Not starting a war, just never liked them, guess we are all different.

Oh man, I hear ya. I'm a sucker for concept albums too. It started with The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon, then it went on from there.

Dream Theater's Metropolis pt II: Scenes from a Memory, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, and Octavarium; Opeth's Still Life and My Arms, Your Hearse; Blind Guardian's Nightfall in Middle-Earth; Pretty much any Rhapsody of Fire album (though those guys are starting to annoy me a little). I have more than listed here and I love them all. I'm guessing it's mostly because they're concept albums.

I've never heard this Iced Earth album, but I do have the prelude album Something Wicked this way Comes. I should pick it up.

Now don't give me that look. I was forced by the sweet eyes of a girl, now how could I refuse her a dream-come-true?

So yeah, I'm going because of her, not because of the band, but I might as well use it as a reason to listen to some of their stuff and perhaps appreciate the concert anyway. It's definitely not my kind of metal anyway.

As for Nightfall in Middle Earth, great album, a must have for any powermetal fan.

Congrats on the good news Chrono, I never heard of the band before, but you seem highly enthusiastic about them. Are they a small band? Kinda like what Graveworm is to me?

They're a band from finland and they have never toured in north america. They have 4 albums right now. They used to be compared to CoB but IMO they're nothing like them... They've changed their sound on the last album The Black Waltz to lower style of singing instead of the higher pitch melo-death style. Lovin it.

They've just finished recording and mixing their 5th studio album and it should be out soon Check them out if you have time.

That's werid, right before I look at Kalmah here, I downloaded them to check them out because of a Crysis physics test on youtube. the song had a great melody during the chorus and then the second guitar joined with a harmony, really caught my ear.

I'm listening to the Avantasia album right now, and I heard Khan's voice right away. Great so far, to bad I have to go to work.

Aw, tough luck Aided, good to hear you like it so far, I've heard nothing but good things about the album. I can't wait till my copy arrives. I refuse to download the album anyway. I've ordered it yesterday and it was send today, hopefully I'll get it tomorrow.

Also, there is going to be some special re-release of the first two albums in a nice package which I will definitely get to replace these shoddy MP3s

Holy Diver, nice, did you ever listen to the original album of Dio? It's recommended, nice 80s metal. I found it a bit overhyped but that's perhaps because I'm not fully able to put it in the perspective of metal history. They say it's a milestone, and for that it perhaps gets much more credit than I'm able to give it. Nonetheless, a good album if you can pick it up for €6,- like I was able to

Nice to see people who still buy CDs, kudos!

Speaking of buying CDs, my Scarecrow arrived yesterday. The limited edition Digipack of course. I don't settle for regular releases, especially not if they limited one goes for only one euro more. Twisted Mind set the mood, I like the opening riffs, but it's not my favorite song of the album. I've never been into Kamelot either, so I guess the fact Khan is singing doesn't do much for me either. My absolute favorite song is The Scarecrow, I'm not exaggerating when I say that song brought tears to my eyes and send shivers down my spine. This song alone is worth the album. They said it's supposed to be "the next Seven Angels", I disagree, it doesn't have as many interludes and different sections like that song. That said, it's complext enough to keep you on the edge of your seat with amazing vocals from Jorn Lande and Tobias Sammet, the fact you'll notice Kiske on the background is icing on the cake. This song, together with The Toy Master makes it worth the lable of Avantasia. The Toy Master really has a very eerie atmosphere, I suppose it's Alice Cooper who is to blame

The other songs are nice, Another Angel down remains one of my favorites, mainly because of the vocals, I'm a Jorn Lande fan, I loved his first Masterplan album as well, which I still recommend to any metal fan because of the 5/5 quality. The other songs fit in perfectly well with the concept of the album, despite being very Edguy-ish. Shelter From the Rain is a nice full tempo song with vocals from Michael Kiske, it just feels a bit too cliché, happy power metal. Disappointing, because I had hoped to hear Kiske in a way different than the Eagle Fly Free style we know him for from his Helloween days. Carry me Over and Lost in Space are the most poppish songs, or as others lable it: Bon Jovish. It's the lyrics that fit in well with the concept, so that's a good redeeming factor.

Definitely one song not to overlook is What Kind of Love, and just as I was typing this my mom commented she found it so recognizable, as if she has heard it before. So yeah guys, even your parents might enjoy this album However, this song is definitely a great ballad, some might find it cheesy, but I think it's awesome with some nice variety. The moment Tobias kicks in and explores his highest vocal ranges send shivers down my spine again, on my second listen I actually noticed that at that moment it was Kiske again backing him up, adding another nice layer of depth, rather than having vocals doubled by Tobi himself. This song is a lot better than the other ballad, Cry Just a Little, which isn't that bad, but just nothing special.

Concluding I think this is a great album, I definitely love the concept as a whole, which is about a lonesome songwriter getting lost in himself, even in his own mind, or as Tobias put it, "It's my personal Dr. Faust story." There's some great songs on this album (The Scarecrow, What Kind of Love, The Toy Master), and some that simply aren't moody enough making them a bit too much new-style Edguy. Still it's quality filler. It's not the fantasy filled Avantasia like the previous two albums, and I think it's a great step they made, they avoid fantasy clichés and cheesy powermetal and it's become a very nice conceptual album. I'd give it an 8.5/10.

Having Alice Cooper sing "I'm the master of toys, and all you girls and boys are welcome to my wonderland" is disturbing enough to warrant a purchase

I've been to KoRn yesterday, let me break up the evening for you.

The first band was Deathstars. A freakish Swedish band which sounds like Blutengel and Rammstein put in a blender, finished with a tad of Marilyn Manson toppage. I highly enjoyed the band, they make some nice music, and were a great opening band to set the mood. Too bad the sound sucked a bit, or it was just my position standing 10 meters away from some speakers that are supposed to fill a 5500 people hall. Their act is awesome, a freakish singer with his pants down to half 6, oily body and freakish moves. He definitely drew the attention, and that's what they're there for.

The second band was Texas' Flyleaf. A band featuring a hyperactive bass player and a female vocalist. A great band, great performance, and an emo crowd... It took 5 songs before she took away the hair covering her face so I could get a good view of who was actually singing. At first I thought she had a sorta weak sounding voice, well, not really weak, but more like the singer from the Bangles. A split second later she started screaming, doing a great job there Not exactly my music, if I want a screaming chick I'll visit Arch Enemy again, she'd tear her apart, eat her up and have Amy Lee for desert

Again, a good band to support KoRn, but not my keg of ale. Having some emo lasses scream and wail in your ears does more damage than bassdrum pounding through the speakers itself. So yeah, my biggest fear of that night came true.

Then came the main act, KoRn, we already managed to slip into front, man I love being out to a gig with a girl when the bar is so far out of reach. She goes for the toilet, I hand her a few coins, she she comes back with a nice large glass of beer. Meanwhile the mobile beer dude passed us by as well, so I had my hands full Since I didn't know much of KoRn's discography I was very glad we met another couple of which the dude was in the same position I was: Protecting his girl from any mosh pit going on and just enjoying for as far as we knew it. Seeing how he was wearing a Motorhead shirt we had something to talk about: The loudest bands on earth Apparently he stood only a few meters away from me during the Gamma Ray and Helloween gig a few weeks ago, also he was there with Hammerfall when we had some Curtains on Fire. My girl managed to get up front completely, so that definitely made her night, meanwhile I could rest assured she'd be safe since in the complete front there's not as much trouble going on. Staying a bit back provides more fun though. Met up with a Tschech dude, awesome guy, started smoking weird **** though, the guy he shared it with mentioned heroine, but what gives. He asked me to give him a push up the crowd. Too bad no one wanted to carry him

KoRn put up a great show, playing a lot of old hits, together with the good stuff from their latest album, I recognized most songs because I had a tracklist from another night. Together with the crowd and the guys around me I really had a blast of a night as well, the dude just needs to learn to play bagpipes, his noise was deafening The gig ended 20 minutes early, which was a bit of a disappointment, but what we got was a great concert, if she asks me to go with her again I'd be cool with that. Before you ask, I was there because her BF would be completely out of place there, hating the music and most likely to get in a fight with moshers, he's no sportsman Besides, a tiny dude like him could do any crowd control either, more likely he'd get trampled under some army boots lol

I was glad I was able to give her a great night, she got a personal smile from the singer as well, so she has something to remember. I had an awesome gig with some very entertaining bands, a meet up with an old girlfriend of mine who I hadn't seen in years, and had a rather entertaining night with the good guys out there, I'll just forget the emo crap and the guys who I need to punch in the guts for their problems with my Manowar shirt. But I decided not to give a ****, there's no debating religion anyway. Besides, I was the offender going to a KoRn gig with a Manowar shirt and a Gamma Ray zipper. Hail and Kill
