Cardinal Ratzinger now Pope Benedict XVI. www.yahoo.com. This guy was the one who was in that junior hitler thing or whatever right?

Just what I wanted. An Ultra-Conservative guy to run the Vatican.

BTW, he claims that he was enrolled in Hitler's N_azi youth because at the time it was compulsory.

Anyway, the guy is already 78. I wonder how long he'll last......

BTW, here's the Yahoo News link: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp.../ts_nm/pope_dc

EDIT: Come on, why the word n.azi is censored? There're legitimate uses for this word, after all. There's no need to be radical and censor it.

EDIT 2: I like how Dr. J., from Changesurfer Radio defined the new Pope:

Yes, Ratzinger is not only an arch-biocon, but an arch theocon and just
plain con. He was the hatchetman on liberation theology and ran JPII
Inquisition.

Well, based on his previous public statements and what is known about his track record, Ratzinger seems like one who is going to maintain the status quo.

It doesn't matter one way or another for me since I'm not a Catholic. However, I think a pope from South America, Asia, or Africa, would have been a better representative for all Catholics. The fastest source of new converts have been in Asia and Africa and I believe that 1/2 or 1/3 of all Catholics reside in South America (I'm haphazardly quoting stats here... somebody correct me if I'm wrong). IMO, it would reinvigorate the Church if they picked somebody who is more representative of the Catholic population. Instead, they pick another stodgy, old European guy.

In addition, cardinals from the third world (especially those from Africa) are more open to the idea of contraception and condom use which would help decrease the rates of STDs, AIDS, and population explosion in the Third World.

You know what would really help decrease the rates of STDs, AIDS, and population explosion in the Third World? Monogamy!

You know, the more liberals bash this guy, the more I know he is the guy for the job.

Yup, we were talking about this at work today... he's such an extremist, that I actually though he was the only one who wouldn't have a chance at becoming the Pope.

What, do you think he'll have a change of heart and became more liberal just because he's the Pope now?

You say that like being liberal is a good thing. Funny, try to keep in mind that other people think the exact opposite.

1) You're distorting my words. In no way I said liberal > conservative. All I said was that Ratzinger is ultra-conservative, and very unlikely to change his opinions at this point of his life.

2) I don't have anything against conservatives, but Ratzinger is way too conservative, almost an extremist. And that's why I don't like him.

Meh, let the catholics have their pope. I mean, Catholicism is pretty conservative by nature.

I distort no such thing. I merely stated my opinion based on whatever you have said. If I was wrong, then I apologize.

But how can he more liberal, when he isn't liberal right now as it is. I'd prefer it if he didn't even show a trace of liberalism. It is the root of all evil!

While we're on this, explain how Ratzinger is an extremist. How d'you even know the guy? Oh that's right. It's because he won't comprimise on issues of abortion or euthenasia, no matter what, right? That's al liberals care about right? Sex and death, free with no consequences for everyone!

And nobody in the Vatican thought he was an extremist. He was voted in barely under 24 hours.

and what's wrong with a conservative pope? Second, he bailed on ****s. He went home when he found out what national socialism was all about. Third the guy will probably die within ten years. Fourth most of you people arn't catholic, heck, i'll go out on a limb and say most of you are athiests, agnostics at best. so what do you care about the catholic religion?

What do you mean? A person doesn't have to be liberal to be more liberal (in fact, it works the opposite way). Having more light in the dark makes more sense than having light in the light.

And by extremist I believe he means he leans to one side too much (too conservative). You can have extremists on both sides of the camp (too liberal, too conservative). It's not necessarily a bad thing (although I think so).

And I agree with Seta-San that we shouldn't criticize the pope. If you're not catholic it really has nothing to do with you. I'll take the liberal stance and say to each his own

Actually, both Boltz and I have good reasons to be interested in this: We live in a country where the large majority of the population is catholic. Decisions made by this church may have an effect in our lives, even if we follow different religions (or no religion at all).

Edit: Just saw this, and had to reply:

Can't you please leave the straw man arguments out of this thread?

Or do you really think that, just because someone doesn't like Ratzinger's ultra-conservative opinions, he's pro-abortion and pro-euthanasia?

Ah, then I guess you can criticize but really, you shouldn't have expected anything different. Catholicism has always been strictly conservative and it's not going to change anytime soon. You'll probably only find liberal Christians outside the RCC.
