Petroleum pollution, how to solve?

Hi guys,
This is going to be really off-topic, but here I go:
I'm asking this on behalf of an old friend (who doesn't use internet). He owns a piece of land up in New Jersey in a pretty remote area. He's been trying to sell it, but the buyers complain about the problem of petroluem pollution. Since the area is included in the naturally protected list (thing), he couldn't mine it or anything like that. So right now he's looking for solutions to clean it up.
I've try googling it up and found some companies that does this kind of stuff on large scales. If anyone knows or have experience with this stuff, please let me know, thanks!
