I heard on NBC news tonight that President Bush, within the last week, called Iraq a "chaotic success." Does anyone know when/how he said this? All I know is I heard the phrase and it sounds kind of odd out of context, so maybe it makes more sense in context. I've been searching for it, but nothing to this effect seems to be out there.

Ah, I guess it was even more recent than I thought. Thanks for finding it, Unicron. I'm going to have to look in Time magazine and see exactly what he had to say though - such wording is peculiar.

Bush called the whole Iraq thing a "catastrophic success."
No one is really sure what that means -- although most people have probably heard of a "catastrophic failure", as that was used to describe the shuttle tile reentry disaster. In other news, the chocolate rations will be halved today -- doubleplus good. Rand. |

Well said, Rand. It seems that Bush is fluent in doublespeak Doublething, comrade, doublethink ![]() (And I think that both "catastrophic success" and "chaotic success" are good examples of applied doublethink )

it may be the 12 years I've lived in the south of USA speaking but I dont think it such a terrible play on words...and I get made fun of for being too well spoken.
I liken the phrase to the British commander talking after the battle of "Bunker Hill" (American Rev. War) saying that if they win too many more battles like that, that they'll lose the war...although we didnt lose this (Iraq) war...

well, bush did meet his goal of getting rid of suddam. so that makes it a success.
he just failed to stablize the region... thus chaos. which only happened because everyone was playing politics, including bush, as the job was done half @-$-$-ed.

Bush his way of making ppl agree in some point or not to admit he is wrong:say something that totally confuses the ppl so they dont even get what your saying to make it sound very very very intellectual to the more stupid ppl and to get the "whateeever" reaction from the others.

When he said "The war on terrorism cannot be won" he said that without prompts etc.. When he said "We can win the war on terrorism" he had prompts etc.. and was told what to say.. So as far as I am concerned he knows truly deep inside he has no clue what he's doing.

hmm... Chaotic or catastrophic success is right in one thing... They did take down the Hussein and bring "democracy" to Irak, but they also brought Irak into civil war... And Irak also is becoming a funding problem to US economy... So it is chaotic success... Oh, just to make sure, I'm against Bush...
