Where's Darkness ? Only Elemental magic that I can relate to... plus, normally Darkness Magic owns Elemental Magic (and subsequently it gets owned by Light magic who is at the same time owned by Elemental Magic... perhaps I've spent too much time playing MTG and FE)...

i guess darkness isnt there cause it isnt an actual element, neither is light, in fact, fire earth air and water arent elements either, you have to get a periodic table to get the elements if you wanna be specific (waits for boltzman to get here )

Yes and no... in fantasy literature the elements are reduced to Fire, Water, Wind and Earth. Then you have 2 additional which are Light and Darkness... Thunder and Ice are considered derivations of Wind and Water respectively, though sometimes they are named as elements of their own.

So... I stand by my choice, Dark Element magic rules

No... if you begin with the periodic table references this thread will shift its topic to chemistry in a breeze

ATM Wind, just drifting away in my dreams, drifting amongst all kinds of ppl with no purpose.... I'll just see where I end up....

Note that this is not my fav. element to be...

I'd prefer Fire: Giving the persons I love the warmth they need, the comfort. Persons I don't like can get their arses burnt if they don't watch out with me

Water or Ice. All my Dragoon does is Distortion Renkei's. At 65, it's all Light from there.

Then, associating with the fact that we love japan phantasy, we should add wood and thunder to the list, two of the elements in Japanese folklore (along with water and fire IIRC)

Anyway since i like wierd combinations how about red ice

Modern fantasy literature is based on the ancient greeks' notion of four elements (in fact, the list was supposedly made by Empedocles, at least according to Plato). Among the pre-socratic philosophers, Heraclitus maintained that everything came from fire; Anaximander and Pythagoras were sure that water was the source of everything (classical greek metaphysics, no emphasis at all on empirical evidence).

For the ancient chinese there were 5 elements: fire, water, earth, metal and wood.

Anyway, you can't really define darkness as an element. You can make a case for defining light as a separate element (though personally I would classify it as fire, since both are propagated through photons). Darkness could never be an element per se, since it's operationally defined as the absence of light (how can you ascribe properties to something that is defined as the absence of something else?).

But you could also make a case for darkness as an element if you invoke some sort of dark matter as it's manifestation. Therefore you would change the traditional operational definition of darkness, redefining it as non-baryonic matter (this kind of thing is really possible within the framework of modern physics [according to the latest measurements, ~90% of the observable universe is composed of dark matter; up to 60% of it could be non-baryonic]).

Anyway, I would rather go with Strider's opinion, and adopt the periodic table . Given the choice I would pick iron . Give me a stelar core (from a star at least 25 times as massive as our Sun) composed of iron and I'll blow up the solar system with a supernova (not to mention that it would be quite a show of fireworks ).

From the traditional greek elements I would choose fire: photons rule

Hmm, sometimes I get the impression that I write too much about too little (/me remembers Bohr's remarks about the philosopher and the specialist )
