Chronicles of Ridiculous

Anyone seen Chronicles of Rid**** yet?

It is one of the most unintentionally hilarious movies of the year. Man, Vin Diesel really should try out for comedy. I don't know if his humourless, uncharismatic acting is intentional (like the Rock's tongue-in-cheek performances) but man... I haven't laughed so hard since Steven Seagal stopped making movies/parodies of himself.

See it for the comedic value. It's one helluva comedy!

uhg, my watching the useless xXx after my cousins glowing review of it being the most awesome movie (fortunately I neither payed for the movie nor died from watching it) cemented my opinion of diesel that his only well played role was that of the guy in saving private ryan that got his ass shot off by a sniper...well done gurgling sounds of a dieing man...I have to give him that.

I already expected the worst from this movie. Most contemporary sci-fi movies (not really sci-fi, but with sci-fi themes) suck, anyway

He was good in pitch black. A movie untainted by pop culture, made for a specific target audience that does not include "america". Back when nobody knew who he was, and fame has yet to poison his (and the director's) mind. Other than that, i have not seen him in an entertaining role.

There was a prequel to this movie that I'm assuming is called "Pitch Black." I saw it on Sci-fi. They were on this really creepy planet where all the colonists died. There were cratures that used radar to see because the planet was really dark. If I'm correct, Rid**** had some operation done that enhances is eyesight in the dark... tremendously.

I'll probably see it just to see how well it ties in with Pitch Black, which I thought was a good movie and he played a nice anti-hero (I particularly like anti-heroes). I know enough to stay away from movies like xXx :P

I saw PITCH BLACK, the first film in the story, which was made for pay-TV in 2000.
As I started watching it, I fully expected it to be a sucky "made for TV" crapfest, but it surprised me with an intelligent SF script, cool CG effects, and a flashy directing style.

(Some spoilers...)

Vin Diesel plays a badass convict named Rid**** being transported between worlds, along with 40 other passengers and crew held in cryo-suspension. Navigating on autopilot, the ship is soon perforated by a meteor shower and sent dramatically crash-landing in the desert of an alien world, leaving only a dozen survivors.

We learn that Rid**** wears shaded goggles because, preparing for a life sentence in the constant darkness of an underground penal colony, he paid a blackmarket surgeon for an operation that has made his eyes hypersensitive to light, helping him to see and survive in the dark. He managed to escape that prison planet, but has now been recaptured by a bounty hunter who is returning him to custody.

As the crash survivors start scouting around for water and supplies, they find parched skeletons of giant alien creatures on the seemingly barren planet, and later stumble across a long-abandoned survey camp from an Earth mining party, now strangely absent...
They learn that the planet's three suns make nightfall a rarity, but a total eclipse brings darkness once every 22 years... which just happens to be today! ...Improbable timing, but this darkness suddenly gives Rid**** the night-vision advantage, making him the reluctant hero when the rest of the group need his help against a species of nocturnal alien bat-things which the eclipse has brought out of hiding.

The movie is great at holding suspense and throwing surprises as the script develops all of the characters with interest beyond merely being shark bait. There is also some cleverly imagined science presented in the ecosystem of this nocturnal world, such as the creatures fighting among themselves like bull rams (butting their horns for alpha dominance) instead of just portraying them in a boogieman role with nothing better to do than chase humans. Our heros later make use of counterpart organisms that glow in the dark, all fitting nicely into the overall theme of light against dark.

It's an efficient and violent SF tale which any fan of the first Predator movie would love.
But apparently there were never any plans for a sequel, which is why "Chronicles of Rid****" may suck ass by comparison, since the writer didn't initially have any additional material in mind, so he had to go back and change his original ideas about Rid****'s universe to appease the studio demands for expanding the story.

Coinciding with the release of "Chronicles", there's a new animated DVD by Peter Chung (of "Aeon Flux" fame), a video game where Rid**** escapes from prison, and a widescreen unrated director's cut DVD of PITCH BLACK which has some added footage, although I've heard that this new cut unfavorably throws off the tight focus of the original movie.

Rid****: promising character concept.
PITCH BLACK: exciting action thriller.
"Chronicles of Rid****": enter at your own risk. [<--need a "thumbs down" emoticon here.]

oh! I thought that was only a game.. juz kidding... the movie??? well.. I'm not satisfied... Vin Diesel is much better when he appeared at The Fast And The Furious... in chronicles of rid****....hmm... isn't it that rid**** are what frogs say???? rid****! rid****! rid****! hehe...

all I can say for the movie is..."even the Graphics sucks..."

you can easily differentiate the CG animated humans and ships to the real life forms... whew!

It was ok...The wife enjoyed the eye candy, and we enjoyed some of the fight scenes. There was a few somewhat believable tie ins to Pitch Black, but few enough that it didn't hurt the original...The tie ins are character base only..not plot.

We also got some comedic value...indeed we believe it to be tongue-in-cheek humor.

The ending gives fans something to look forward to for an ongoing tale...The CGI effects were as mentioned flawed in some scenes, but overall a decent flick that gives you an "action" fix...just don't expect much if you are one of those analyze the science behind it look for flaws in the universe types.

I whole-heartedly agree with Galvatron on his views of Pitch Black. However, the sequel Chronicles of Rid**** is completely laughable. It is mainly plagued by a horrible script that is copied & pasted from the scripts of movies like Star Wars, Conan the Barbarian, Highlander, and Dune. With that said, if you're a long-time Sci-Fi fan...Chronicles of Rid**** is nothing you haven't already seen. I suggest to wait untill Spiderman 2 comes out to get your summer big-budget movie fix!
