I sincerely doubt it... even Republican hawks are appalled at the idea. In addition, despite how much U.S. civil rights have been eroded, I guarantee that 90% of the population would be against it.

That being said, I see Senator Hagel's point. He is one of the most reasonable foreign policy experts within the Republican party. Chuck Hagel makes the same point as New York Senator Charles Rangel: the majority of Americans dying in Iraq are men from poor to lower middle class families; the majority of whom are so-called minorities (ie. Black, Hispanic, etc.) in the U.S. Much like the Vietnam War, the people who are being killed in Iraq are poor and/or from a minority background.

It's fascinating to note that the most ardent supporters of the war in Iraq are white, upper middle class families whose children (for the most part) do not serve in the military. It's easy to support a war when your own children are not the ones dying. Hagel, Rangel, and other like them argue that if the draft is reinstated, people will think twice about going to war. I don't agree with the reinstatement of the draft but I agree with their sentiment that Americans should face up to their responsibilies and not just let the poorer elements of society do the dying for them.

I had to serve 2 years in the Israeli army and it boost my team skills, and helped me focus on tasks. Lucky for me at the time there was relative peace. As for the USA I hear alot of my friends speak heavily against joining the army not because the army is awful or anything but because they wish for a more calm life. Granted a calm life for one means a harsh life for another in some form down the line. Think of it like a complex equation, has to be in balance. This may sound alittle harsh but as far as drafting goes I am against it because drafting people who do not want to fight may cause the military more harm than good. Some people who where drafted in Vietnam would not shoot their weapons because they did not wish to kill. What good then would it be to draft those who will only slow you the military down? Its the eager gung-ho if you will "young and patriotic" men/women you want in your army.

I'm not passing this by President Bush. This is the same man that went to war over Iraq on flimsy evidence on WMD.

If there's a draft, it will be probably after Bush wins the election. When the body count starts raising and Iraq is falling apart, I believe the draft will come.

We are already in the military...no use whining about it. Oddly enough it has been reported that recruiting efforts for the military are increasing, and that those enlisted are electing to re-enlist

Both Dark Watcher, and our wife are enlisted in the military...we have been in for over 10 years now...we are no stranger to war.

However we enlisted by choice...a draft would revoke such a choice..thus we understand the reluctance of some of our American counterparts.

Oddly enough, America is one of the few countries that do not require a mandatory military tour...
We know Korea requires it....Mexico may also still..for at least a year. It is considered a civil duty to your country.

Well if it does happen, it doesnt really matter to me since I cannot be accepted by the military anyway due to my eye surgeries.

i really wouldn't mind joining the armed forces as i have been thinking about it for quite some time now, as my education is a financial burden and the rotc program is really good. if i enlist, at least i get a choice of where i want to go (air force, etc). But if i get drafted, there's a good chance i could go into the hot spots.

one of the reasons i don't like how this war is going is because of all the political tap dances it's going through, i remember vietnam on how the vietcong had sanctuaries in cambodia and the US won't follow them. much of the same is happening on how the insurgence have safe haven in syria and iran.

Not gonna start a flame wave, but the draft will not happen. If given the proper oppurtunity I would re-enlist.

Its called army service and its supposed to be compulsory but:

-Only 30% actually do the service (usually those that filled in the registration form late ) (yay i was part of the lucky 70% ^^)
-If you actually get in you only have to go once each Saturrday for 6 hours, you do a lil exercise and dedicate most time to social labors.

it wont happen they are extending the periods of active duty for those already out there...after all a volunteer makes a much hardier worker than a conscript(is that the right term?).

This is not like Vietnam. It's more like the situation Russia faced during it's occupation of Afghanistan. Bloody mess, anyway. I don't think there will be drafts. Unexperienced people sent into this hell against their will are not helpfull and a relatively easy target, too.

Simple as this. Why should I fight in a war.

A. I didn't start.
B. I don't believe.
C. Becasue somebody wants to show daddy they have a nice army..

Also I am a only son. Yes, I would have to still go.

Taken straight from the selective service website.

"Contrary to popular belief, "only sons," "the last son to carry the family name," and "sole surviving sons" must register and they can be drafted. However, they may be entitled to a peacetime deferment if there is a military death in the immediate family."

If there were going to be a draft, I would refuse, to me life is more precious than politics.
However I do not think there will be a draft because Bush's popularity would hit rock bottom.

I'm not entirely sure, but I believe that I can't be drafted. When I was born, I received too much oxygen, and that excess oxygen damaged the nerve in the back of my eye. Basically, there's no way to correct my vision, as far as I understand (Although if someone knows of something, anything, I'd love to hear about it.....I'd like good vision.....).

And I would so draft dodge if they tried to draft me for such a ****ing lame and unnecessary thing as this "War on Terrorism". It's not a War on Terrorism, it's the disintegration of a country (and I don't mean Iraq).

It doesn't take much to shoot a gun. Unless your hands are chopped off, you might be in the draft.

It doesn't take much to get excused from the draft, either. And my eyesight is BAD.....something like 20/400+.....and currently (As far as I am aware) irrepairable, even with those "army glasses" I've heard about that you wear for something like 2 weeks and they're supposed to totally fix your vision.
